Identities in English foreign language textbooks

Anotácia:

Disertační práce se věnuje problematice identit v učebnicích anglického jazyka. Identitami jsou chápány jak identity postav zobrazovaných v učebnicích, tak identity čtenářů, které učebnice rozvíjí. V úvodní kapitole práce představujeme teoretická východiska výzkumu, konkrétně sociální teorie vzdělávání, jako je kritická pedagogika. Dále pojednáváme o kulturním rozměru cizojazyčné výuky a pojmu identita. Další kapitoly teoretické části jsou zaměřeny na teorii a výzkum učebnic, zejména na otázky ideologie a reprezentativnosti v učebnicích a roli čtenáře v interpretaci textu. V empirické části práce nejprve uvádíme výzkumné cíle a otázky. Hlavními výzkumnými cíli je popsat zobrazené národní, etnické/ rasové, genderové a sociální identity postav mluvčích ve vybraných učebnicích anglického jazyka, popsat typy a míru prezentace kulturních a ideologických témat obsažených v Rámcovém vzdělávacím programu a vytvořit a aplikovat typologii otevřených a uzavřených textů pro učebnice anglického jazyka. Dále v empirické části představujeme metody analýzy učebnic, tedy obsahovou analýzu textu, kritickou analýzu diskurzu a analýzu pomocí klasifikace otevřeného a uzavřeného textu. Koncept uzavřených a otevřených textů je zpracován a aplikován pro analýzu učebnic anglického jazyka. Vzorek analyzovaných učebnic obsahuje učebnice New Headway, New English File, Maturita Solutions a Time to Talk. V první fázi analýzy jsou vybrány a kategorizovány textové jednotky, ve druhé fázi jsou relevantní jednotky analyzovány pomocí kritické analýzy diskurzu a ve třetí fázi je vyhodnocena míra manipulativnosti textů pomocí klasifikace uzavřených a otevřených textů. Z výsledků vyplývá, že zahraniční učebnice oxfordského nakladatelství určené mezinárodním čtenářům zobrazují národnostně pestré identity mluvčích cílového jazyka, zatímco česká učebnice v daném vzorku zobrazuje pouze britské nebo americké mluvčí, čímž omezuje u žáků představu cílového společenství. Byly zjištěny rozdíly mezi počty textových jednotek věnovaných tématům multikulturní výchovy a výchovy k myšlení v evropských a globálních souvislostech Rámcového vzdělávacího programu pro gymnázia, analýza také ukázala rozdíly ve způsobech prezentace těchto témat. Na příkladech jsou doloženy ideologické obsahy uzavřených úloh v učebnicích, zvláště těch, které vychází z populární kultury a přispívají ke kultu celebrit. Autorka na závěr akcentuje potenciál otevřených úloh pro interkulturní učení a dává další doporučení pro pedagogickou praxi a výzkum.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the problem of identities in English foreign language textbooks. Identities are understood both as representations of the portrayed target language community in textbooks and as the identities of readers fostered by the texts. The first part of the thesis introduces the theoretical background of the research, particularly social theories of education, such as critical pedagogy, the cultural perspective in foreign language teaching including intercultural education and the concept of identity. The final chapters of the theoretical part focus mainly on the theory and research of textbooks, the questions of ideology and representation in textbooks and the role of the reader in interpretation of texts. The empirical part of the thesis firstly presents the main research goals and research questions of the thesis. The main goals of the research are to describe the portrayed national, ethnic/racial, gender and social identities of the speakers in the selected foreign language textbooks, describe the types and degree of presentation of cultural and ideological content in the textbooks as relates to the Framework Education Programme and create and apply a typology of open and closed texts in foreign language textbooks. Next, the methods used in the research are discussed, i.e. content analysis, critical discourse analysis and the analysis by means of open and closed text classification. The author of the research elaborates the concept of open and closed texts for English language textbook analysis and gives examples of application. Four current textbooks of English as foreign language are analysed, New Headway, New English File, Maturita Solutions and Time to Talk. In the first stage of the analysis, text units were identified and categorised, in the second stage relevant units were analysed by the methods of critical discourse analysis, and finally the degree of manipulativeness of the text was assessed based on the classification of open and closed texts. Results of the research indicate that while foreign language textbooks published by Oxford University Press are aimed at international learners and depict them as characters of the textbooks, the Czech textbook in the sample portrays only British or American characters, thus creating a specific image of the target community. Differences were found in the number of text units dealing with the topics of multicultural education and education towards thinking in European and global contexts, however, the analysis also showed differences in the presentation of the content. The author demonstrates ideological investment of closed types of exercises, especially those drawing on the cult of celebrities and popular culture and points out the possibilities of open exercises for intercultural learning. Finally, recommendations for teaching practice as well as future research are put forward.
