The thesis depicts the historical development of the detective literary genre from the first manuscripts to the nineteenth century. The focus of this thesis lies on the description of the English detective story and on the analyses of the most significant authors of the genre and their works, namely Arthur Conan Doyle, Gilbert Keith Chesterton and Agatha Christie.
