Transformation of the cinema Scala in Brno: Scala as a cinema, Scala as a space

Abstract:

Předmětem zkoumání této diplomové práce je znovuotevřené brněnské kino Scala, kterému ke konci roku 2011 hrozil definitivní zánik. Protestní reakce obyvatel města a kritika ze strany akademiků Masarykovy univerzity iniciovala proces jeho záchrany, který vyústil ve vznik Univerzitního kina Scala. Od října 2014 je kino znovu v provozu, jeho novým vlastníkem je Masarykova univerzita a filmovou produkci pro veřejnost zajišťuje soukromá společnost Aeropolis. Tato práce si za svůj úkol klade dva cíle – za prvé kriticky reflektovat transformaci dříve městského kina na kino univerzitní. V rámci cíle druhého si pokládá otázku, zda má Scala potenciál stát se novým kulturním prostorem a hledá způsoby, jak tuto hypotézu naplnit. Těmto cílům je přizpůsobena struktura práce, která je členěná do tří částí: deskriptivní, analytické a návrhové. Úvodní deskriptivní část představuje čtenáři nový profil kina Scala. Kromě programové nabídky definuje okruh činností, časový harmonogram, role a pravomoci Masarykovy univerzity a společnosti Aeropolis. Věnuje se také specifikaci prostoru objektu a upozorňuje na některé jeho nedostatky. Poznatky deskriptivní části zajišťují podklady pro návrhovou část a potvrzují hypotézu, že Scala má ambice nabízet svým návštěvníkům více než jen filmový zážitek. Těžištěm analytické části je SWOT analýza. Její výsledky odhalují strategie, které by kino ve svém dalším vývoji mohlo uplatnit. Ukazuje se, že multifunkční využitelnost kina je jeho silnou stránkou. Jako klíčová příležitost je stanoveno zapojení studentů do tvorby doprovodného kulturního programu a využití lidských zdrojů Masarykovy univerzity. Překážky, které mohou ohrozit realizaci kulturních akcí, jsou definovány jako nedostatek financí, střet zájmů, kolize s pravidelným programem kina a absence pracovníka, který by tyto akce zajišťoval. Na základě deskriptivní a analytické části navrhuje autorka práce několik možných variant pro budoucí rozvoj kulturního a vzdělávacího programu v prostředí Scaly. Návrhy jsou doplněny konkrétními příklady. Univerzitní kino Scala se pomalu transformuje na moderní, činorodé kino a místo, které nemusí být vždy navštíveno jen kvůli filmu. Práce ukazuje, že pro zachování atraktivnosti kina a pro rozvoj doprovodného programu by kino mělo investovat do lidských zdrojů a vytvářet příznivé podmínky pro spolupráci s vnějším okolím.

Abstract:

The topic of my Diploma Thesis is the newly reopened Scala cinema in Brno, which was almost shut down at the end of 2011. A critical response both from Brno inhabitants and Masaryk University academicians, initiated a rescuing process which led to the birth of the University Cinema Scala. The cinema was reopened in October 2014 by its new owner – the Masaryk University. The public movie production is provided by Aeropolis Company. There are two aims of my thesis – firstly to critically reflect the transformation of a former town cinema into a university cinema. Secondly, my thesis raises a question whether Scala has the potential to become a new cultural space and it also seeks ways how to fulfill this hypothesis. The structure of the thesis is adjusted to reach these aims; therefore it has been divided into three parts – descriptive, analytic and proposal. The first – descriptive part of the thesis – introduces new profile of the cinema. Except for the program itself it also defines whole range of activities, time schedule, the roles and competences of Masaryk University and Aeropolis Company. It also specifies the object and points out its imperfections. The findings of the descriptive part of my thesis offer material for the proposal part and confirm the hypothesis that the ambition of Scala is to offer more than a cinematic experience to its visitors. The focus of the analytical part of my thesis is a SWOT analysis. The results from this analysis show various strategies which the cinema could apply in its next development. The multifunctional utility of the cinema seems to be its strongest aspect. Also the fact that students and human resources of the Masaryk University can participate on the accompanying cultural production proved to be a key opportunity. The obstructions, which could possibly threaten the realization of cultural events, are defined in this thesis as: money insufficiency, battle of concerns, collision with regular program of the cinema and the absence of staff who would organize these events. Based on the descriptive and analytical part of the thesis I propose several possible versions for future development of cultural and educational program in Scala. Specific examples have been added to the proposals as well. The University Cinema Scala is slowly transforming itself into a modern, constructive cinema and a place, where people do not necessarily go to see a movie. To keep up its attractiveness and to evolve its supporting program, the cinema should invest into human resources and create friendly environment for cooperation with its surroundings.
