Museum of Romany Culture as an Actor of Roma National Revival

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá tématy národa, etnické emancipace a procesu národního obrození. Teoretickými východisky práce jsou konstrutivistické teorie, především přístupy Anthonyho Smithe a Benedicta Andersona. Představeny jsou také teoretické přístupy českých autorů, s důrazem na medializovanou debatu mezi Markem Jakoubkem a Pavlem Baršou. Národní obrození, kterým si prošly Evropsé státy v 19. století je porovnáváno s procesem etnické emancipace, kterým si Romové prochází v současné době. Jako důležitý aktér tohoto procesu je prezentováno Muzeum romské kultury. Důraz je kladen také na celkový kontext České republiky a způsob, jakým je zde národ pojímán - toto pojetí ovlivňuje také romskou etnoemancipaci. Kvalitativní analýzou článků vybraných představitelů Muzea pak zjišťujeme, jakým způsobem MRK konceptualizuje především národ a jazyk a romství. Jejich pojetí je pak zásadní, neboť tito představitelé často suplují roli reprezentantů Romů jako celku - žádní Romy zvolení romštní představitelé nejsou. Tito představitelé Muzea pak Romy prezentují podle kontextu a cíle článku jako jednotnou skupinu či skupinu heterogenní. Jejich pojetí národa je pak esenciální, stejně tak jako jejich pojetí romství.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is focused on the topic of nation, etnic emancipation and the process of national revival. The thesis is built mostly on constructivist theoretical approach (such as the theories of Benedict Anderson and anthony Smith). Approaches of Czech theorists are also presented, maily the debate of Pavel Barša and Marek Jakoubek. Thesis compares the national revival of Europian countries in 19. century with processes of ethnic emancipation of Romani people. Museum of Romani Culture is presented as one of the main actors of this ongoing process. The role of the overall social context in the Czech Republic and the way czech nation is conceptualized is also stressed - the way of the conceptualization of nation in Czech context also influeces the understanding of this concept of Romani activists. Articles of selected representatives of the Museum are chosen to be the subject of qualitative textual analysis. We probe how the Museum conceptualize the nation, language and romipen. Their approach to these topics is presented as crucial, because there are no romani representatives, who were elected by romani nation. These representatives thus presents the romani people as homogeneous or heterogeneous group, depending on the goal of the article. Their understanding of nation is rather essential, as well as their understanding of romipen.
