The Role and Purpose of Fine Arts in the Chapels of the Evangelical Church of the Czech Brethren since 1945

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá otázkou, jaké místo náleží v českobratrských bohoslužebných prostorách výtvarnému umění, donedávna tabuizovanému vlivem kalvinistické tradice. Zjišťuje důvody, pro něž se umění v posledních desetiletích do modliteben navrací. Zkoumá kontexty, do kterých výtvarná díla v evangelickém prostředí vstupují. Studuje předpoklady a očekávání, jimž se přizpůsobují. Všímá si podob, jichž při tom nabývají. Obecné tendence, vysledovatelné napříč církví, se práce snaží demonstrovat na šesti vybraných interiérových realizacích, které zároveň poodhalují odlišné přístupy šesti evangelických výtvarníků: Daniela Balabána, cíleně pracujícího s prázdným prostorem (Sněžné); Marie Jiřičkové, posouvající typickou řeč evangelické vizuality, jež sestává z jednoduché symboliky, do expresivní roviny (Praha-Uhříněves); Jiřího Zejfarta, vybízejícího k pozornější recepci kázaného slova prostřednictvím výtvarného přepisu biblického podobenství o rozsévači (Miroslav); Barbory Veselé, naznačující eschatologický rozměr bohoslužeb skrze ztvárnění podobenství o hořčičném zrnu (Prostějov); Zbyňka Honzala, tematizujícího Krista raději jen nepřímo pomocí podobenství o milosrdném Samaritánovi (Jindřichův Hradec); a Miroslava Rady, tematizujícího Krista přímo, ovšem s problematickým přijetím ze strany místního sboru (Praha-Vinohrady).

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the following question: what is the role of fine arts in the Czech Brethren’s chapels, which until recently had been taboo in the Calvinist tradition. The thesis investigates the reasons for the return of fine arts during recent decades. It examines the contexts into which works of art are put. It analyses the conditions and expectations which the works of art meet and conform to. It observes the artistic forms which they take due to this process. General artistic tendencies observed across the whole of the Evangelical Church are demonstrated by six examples of chapel interiors made by six evangelical artists: Daniel Balabán, who deliberately works with empty space (in Sněžné); Marie Jiřičková, who works with both basic Christian symbols and the typical visual aspects of evangelical chapels and transfers them to an expressive level (in Praha-Uhříněves); Jiří Zejfart, whose pictorial representation of The Parable of the Sewer invites us to a more perceptive reception of the homily (in Miroslav); Barbora Veselá, who indicates the eschatological significance of prayers by depicting The Parable of the Mustard Seed (in Prostějov); Zbyněk Honzal, who refers to Christ indirectly with The Parable of the Good Samaritan (in Jindřichův Hradec); and Miroslav Rada, who refers to Christ directly, but at the cost of a problematic reception on the part of the local congregation (in Praha-Vinohrady).
