Romani woman: changes and development of status and roles during a life course in a traditional Romani culture

Abstract:

Na Romy bývá nahlíženo z různých perspektiv. Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá přístupy, jakými bývají Romové popisováni a to především způsobem, jakým je prezentována romská žena v literatuře psané Romkami a autorkami či autory neromského původu. Zaměřuje se především na proměnu statusu a rolí v životě romské ženy v tradiční kultuře slovenských Romů (nazývaných také Servike Roma) a předkládá tak ideálně typický obraz této ženy. Nejprve se zaměřuje na postoje k Romům v historii, následně je definována romská žena a tradiční romská kultura. Jsou vysvětleny sociologické konstrukty jako gender, sociální status a sociální role. Text věnující se postavení romské ženy a její prezentace v literatuře je rozdělen podle životních etap na tři části: dětství a dospívání, dospělosti a konečně stáři. Mezi nejvýraznější role a s nimi spojené statusy, kterých romská žena během svého života dosahuje byly identifikovány: nejstarší sestra, snacha, tchýně a matka. Literatura psaná Romkami je dávána do kontrastu s literaturou psanou autory neromského původu, a to především romisty a antropology. Texty psané neromskými autory a autorkami se v některých tématech liší od textů psaných romskými autorkami, většinou se však shodují. Na nalezené shody a rozdíly je v práci upozorněno.

Abstract:

Romani people are viewed and described from different points of view. This bachelor thesis deals with the way in which is Romani woman presented in the literature written by Romani women themselves and authors who do not have Romani origins. It focuses especially on the change of statuses and roles of Romani women during their life courses in the traditional culture of Slovakian Roma (also called Servike Roma). At first it presents the attitudes to Romani people in the history and after that the Romani woman and traditional Romani culture is defined. There are explained the sociological constructs as gender, social status and social role. The text, which analyses the position of Romani women in the traditional culture and their presentation in literature, is divided into three parts according to the life periods: childhood and adolescence, adulthood and finally senescence. As the most outstanding statuses and roles were identified these: the oldest sister, mother, daughter-in-law and mother-in-law. The literature written by Romani women is put in the contrast with the models provided in the literature of non-Romani authors, especially from the field of romistics and anthropology. The texts of Romani and non-Romani authors differ from each other in some issues but generally they correspond; the accordance and differences found in the texts are pointed out.
