Schlaraffia in the Region of Northwest Bohemia

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá historií poboček spolku Schlaraffia v severozápadních Čechách, konkrétně se jedná o spolky fungující v Teplicích, Ústí nad Labem, Žatci, Chomutově, Mostě, Litoměřicích, Děčíně-Podmoklech a v Dubí. Zaměřuje se na charakteristiku jednotlivých "říší", ve kterých se prolíná charakter dané oblasti, jako těžba uhlí, rozvoj průmyslu aj., s filosofií Schlaraffie. Dalším úkolem práce je přiblížit významné členy těchto společností a představit je nejen v rámci spolku, ale také ve veřejné sféře. Mezi členy často patřili právníci, lékaři, továrníci i hlavní představitelé města. Ačkoli spolek byl striktně recesistický a apolitický, jeho význam pro utváření sociální sítě německojazyčných urbánních elit nemůžeme opomenout.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the history of the branches of the Schlaraffia association in Northwest Bohemia, namely the associations operating in Teplice, Ústí nad Labem, Žatec, Chomutov, Most, Litoměřice, Děčín-Podmokly and Dubí. It focuses on the attributes of the particular "empires" in which the character of the area, such as coal mining, industrial development, etc., is intertwined with the philosophy of Schlaraffia. Another aim of the thesis is to introduce the important members of these fellowships and to present them not only within the association but also in the public sphere. We can find among the members lawyers, doctors, factory owner and the main leaders of the city. Although the society was strictly prank-making and apolitical, its importance in shaping the social network of German-speaking urban elites cannot be overlooked.
