The Pluperfect in Literary Translation

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo popsat jev zvaný předminulý čas. Tento jev nemá v českém jazyce přímý ekvivalent a proto se s ním během překladu musí zacházet opatrně. Tato práce analyzuje tento jev v českém literárním překladu a snaží se zmapovat strategie, které překladatelé při jeho překladu používají. Data k analýze byla získána pomocí korpusu anglických a českých textů zvaný Kačenka 2, v dalších překladech pak bylo vyhledáváno ručně. Výsledné pasáže byly uspořádány do subkorpusů, které pak sloužily k analýze. Překlady, které nebyly považované za správné, či byly posouzené jako potenciálně dvojznačné, byly analyzovány autorkou a poté poskytnuty studentům překladatelství na Katedře anglického jazyka a literatury k překladu. Studenti pro první kolo překladu nedostali žádné informace o tom, jaký jev překládají. Při druhém kole, po upozornění na nebezpečí dvojznačnosti při překladu předminulého času, vytvořili mnozí kvalitnější a přesnější překlady.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the pluperfect in literary translation. The pluperfect is a grammatical tense common in an English narrative but with no direct equivalent in the Czech language. The aim of this thesis is to analyse this construction and identify strategies translators use when they encounter this tense. The research was conducted through Kačenka 2, the Corpus of English and Czech texts, and was later accompanied by manual search through additional translations. Data obtained were used to create subcorpora which were then subjected to analysis. Findings from this part of the research provided valuable information about the strategies and lexical items translators use when dealing with this tense. Series of potentially problematic passages found in the searched texts were given to students of translation at the Department of English and American Studies to translate, first without any information about the grammatical tense which was subject of this research, later with this information and instructions to pay attention to the potential risks of mistranslation of the pluperfect. Most of the students provided more accurate translations after being pointed out their translations may be ambiguous if they do not focus on the pluperfect.
