Genocide of Armenians as an Obstacle to Accession of Turkey to the Europen Union

Abstract:

Cílem předkládané práce je popsat vývoj procesu uznání arménské genocidy v kontextu vzájemného vztahu Turecka a Evropské unie. Uvádím přístupové aktivity a podíl jednotlivých evropských institucí a členských zemí EU při řešení této problematiky. Popisuji do jaké míry je genocida Arménů překážkou pro vstup Turecka do EU. Uznání masakrů Arménů Tureckem jako genocidy se stalo neformálním kritériem pro přijetí této země do Evropské unie. Na začátku své bakalářské práce nejprve shrnu historické pozadí genocidy Arménů, ke které došlo na území dnešního Turecka v letech 1915 – 1918. Uvedu, jak se k této události staví Turecká republika, která je od roku 1999 kandidátskou zemí Evropské unie. V další části se věnuji současným turecko-arménským vztahům. V hlavní kapitole se zaměřuji na postoj nejvíce zapojených institucí a členských zemí EU do této problematiky. V závěrečné části práce rozebírám možná řešení a východiska tohoto problému.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to describe the development of the process of recognition of the Armenian genocide in the context of the mutual relationship between Turkey and the European Union. I present the access activities and contribution of the individual European institutions and EU member states in solving this issue. I describe how large obstacle for the access of Turkey to the EU the genocide of the Armenians may be. The recognition of a massacre of the Armenians by Turkey as a genocide became an informal criterion for the accession to the European Union. At the beginning of my bachelor study, I summarize the historical background of the Armenian genocide which happened in the territory of today’s Turkey in 1915 – 1918. I describe standpoints of the Turkey Republic, the EU candidate country, to this event. In the next part, I pay my attention to the current Turkish – Armenian relationships. In the main chapter, I focus on the approach of the institutions and the EU member states which are most involved in this issue. In the final part, I analyze possible solutions and outcomes of this problem.
