Women Who Are Red Deer Dressed for the Deer Dance: A Feminist Analysis of the Female Characters in Diane Glancy's Plays

Abstract:

In my thesis I explore the female characters in the dramatic work of Diane Glancy, a contemporary novelist, poet and playwright of Cherokee, German and English origin. I consider her heroines to be images of Cherokee women that mirror the changes these women and their social position have undergone since the European invasion. Therefore, to support my literary analysis of Glancy’s female characters, I use ethno-historical and feminist studies, drawing especially on the work of the historian Theda Perdue and the writer and critic Paula Gunn Allen.
