Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness and Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis it to introduce and analyse the novel Heart of Darkness by the English writer of Polish origin Joseph Conrad and a classic movie Apocalypse Now by the American director Francis Ford Coppola who used Heart of Darkness as the model for the script of the mentioned movie. A comparison of both key similarities and differences of the book and the movie will be integral to the thesis? content. Even though both works are parallel, they take place in different places and time. This fact brings various problems and issues of the particular period the works are set in. For example we talk about British colonialism and imperialism or the Vietnam War held by the Americans.

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je představit a analyzovat novelu Srdce temnoty anglického spisovatele polského původu Josepha Conrada a kultovní válečný film Apokalypsa amerického režiséra Francise Forda Coppoly, který použil Srdce temnoty jako námět pro tento film. Nedílnou součástí této práce bude srovnání podobností a klíčových rozdílů literární předlohy s filmovou adaptací. Přestože jsou obě díla obdobná, odehrávají se na jiných místech a v jiném čase, a to sebou přináší odlišné problémy, kterým musela daná doba čelit jako například kolonialismus a imperialismus či válka ve Vietnamu.
