The foreign-policy content of selected State of the Union addresses: a discourse analysis

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je věnována problematice tematického obsahu zahraničněpoliticky orientovaného diskurzu v rámci selektivně vybraného souboru každoročních projevů prezidentů Spojených Států, které jsou v českém prostředí známé pod termínem Zpráva o stavu Unie. S využitím výzkumné metody kritické obsahové analýzy daného diskurzu tato práce poskytuje ucelenou studii zahraničněpolitického obsahu Zpráv o stavu Unie prezidentů Ronalda W. Reagana, Billa J. Clintona, George W. Bushe a Baracka H. Obamy. Konečným cílem této práce je postihnout nejsignifikantnější tematické aspekty zahraničněpolitického diskurzu Zpráv o stavu Unie každého z výše zmíněných prezidentů a prostřednictvím toho objasnit, zda se daný diskurz každého z určené čtveřice amerických prezidentů vyznačuje zaměřením na výhradně jedno predominantní politické téma, či nikoliv.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is dedicated to the problematics of the issue of thematic content of the foreign-policy oriented State of the Union discourse in a selected sample of the American State of the Union presidential addresses. Employing the methodology of a critical content analysis of the relevant discourse, the paper provides a comprehensive study of the foreign-policy content of the annual State of the Union speeches by the United States Presidents Ronald W. Reagan, Bill J. Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack H. Obama. Eventually, the goal of the research is to determine the most significant thematic phenomena within each of the Presidents’ foreign-policy State of the Union communication and that way discover whether there is a single predominant political issue being covered in the respective discourses of all of the four concerned Presidents.
