Bikesharing in Prague at the time of the pandemic

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá využíváním bikesharingu v Praze během pandemické krize způsobené virovým onemocněním COVID-19. Cílem práce bylo zmapovat reakci trhu sdílených kol a pokusit se analyzovat důsledky vládních opatření ovlivňujících běžný chod státu i jeho občanů. Teoretická část popisuje vývoj a okolnosti provozování bikesharingu v Praze v kontextu pražské dopravy a sdílené mobility. Praktická část analyzuje současný stav, hodnotí změny v chování uživatelů a dopad pandemie na užívání bikesharingu v Praze. Výsledky podložené dotazníkovým šetřením a rozhovory se zástupci jednotlivých provozovatelů ukazují proměnu konkurenčního prostředí během období pandemie, nicméně nepotvrzují zásadní změny v četnosti užívání sdílených kol ani v motivaci uživatelů. V diskusi a závěru práce jsou zdůvodněny odpovědi na stanovené výzkumné otázky a zmíněna patřičná doporučení k dalšímu zkoumání této problematiky.

Abstract:

This master thesis deals with the usage of bike sharing in Prague during the pandemic crisis caused by the COVID-19 virus infection. The aim of the work was to map the reaction of the shared bicycle market, and to attempt to analyse the consequences of the government-imposed restrictions affecting the regular functioning of the state and its citizens. The theoretical section describes the development and background of operating a bike sharing project in Prague in the context of its traffic and shared mobility. The practical section analyses the current state of the Prague shared bicycle market, evaluates the changes in user behaviour and the pandemic’s consequences on the usage of bike sharing in Prague. The results, based upon a questionnaire survey and interviews with representatives of individual operators, show a change in the competitive environment during the pandemic era, however do not confirm fundamental changes in the frequency of shared bicycle usage, nor in the user motivation. The discussion and conclusion sections of the paper contain reasoned answers to the proclaimed research questions, as well as appropriate suggestions for further research of this topic.
