Psychological Aspects of Vietnamese Acculturation in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

V disertační práci jsme se zaměřily na akulturaci 1,5. a druhé generace Vietnamců žijících v ČR. Zajímalo nás, jak se vyrovnávají se svojí příslušností k české i vietnamské kultuře (bikulturní identita a kulturní orientace) a negativními jevy s tím souvisejícími (akulturační stres). Předpokládaly jsme roli osobnostních vlastností (podle modelu Velké pětky) při predikci akulturace. Analyzovaly jsme data získaná z dotazníků měřících osobnostní charakteristiky (BFI-44), integraci bikulturní identity (BIIS), akulturaci cestou kulturní orientace (GEQ) a akulturační stres (RASI). Vycházely jsme zejména z konceptu integrace bikulturní identity Benetové-Martinezové a kolegů a z jejich výzkumů minorit v USA. V teoretické části disertační práce jsme vymezily a následně i podrobněji pojednaly zkoumané konstrukty akulturaci, kulturní orientaci, bikulturní identitu, akulturační stres a osobnost. Představily jsme základní způsoby měření akulturace a stav zkoumání akulturace u nás i v zahraničí. Jednu kapitolu jsme věnovaly rovněž komunitě Vietnamců žijících v ČR. V empirické části jsme nejdříve provedly faktorovou analýzu Obecného dotazníku etnicity (GEQ) a určily důležité oblasti kulturní orientace pro české Vietnamce. Faktorové řešení jsme porovnaly s řešením Benetové-Martinézové a kolegů na populaci asijských minorit v USA. Totéž jsme provedly i s proměnnými akulturační stres a bikulturní identita. Následně s využitím základních analýz (korelační analýza, t-testy) jsme ověřily vztahy mezi jednotlivými proměnnými. S využitím hierarchické regresní analýzy jsme uvedly proměnné do vzájemných souvislostí. V diskusi a závěru jsme shrnuly naše výsledky, porovnaly je s výsledky zahraničních výzkumů, kriticky zhodnotily náš výzkum a navrhly možnosti jeho pokračování. Dle našich zjištění čeští Vietnamci lépe ovládají češtinu než vietnamštinu, sledují česká média a setkávají se s Čechy, celkově jsou více orientováni na českou kulturu. Pouze v oblasti kulturní hrdosti převládá hrdost na původní vietnamskou kulturu. Druhá generace Vietnamců ve srovnání s 1,5. generací je méně orientována na vietnamskou kulturu, méně používá vietnamštinu, sleduje vietnamská média a má větší kontakt s Čechy. Na kulturní orientaci českých Vietnamců mají vliv osobnostní vlastnosti přívětivost, neuroticismus a otevřenost, na integraci bikulturní identity přívětivost a otevřenost.

Abstract:

In the dissertation we focused on the acculturation of Vietnamese 1,5. and 2. generation living in the Czech Republic. We were interested in how they cope with their belonging to both Czech and Vietnamese culture (bicultural identity, cultural orientation) and related negative phenomena (acculturation stress). We assume the role of personality traits (according to the Big Five) as one of the most important acculturation predictors. We analyse the data obtained from questionnaires measuring the personality characteristics (BFI-44), bicultural identity integration (BIIS), culture orientation (GEQ) and acculturation stress (RASI). We build on the concept of Benet-Martinez's bicultural identity and her minority research in the USA. In the theoretical part of the dissertation we first define the studied constructs of acculturation, cultural orientation, bicultural identity, acculturation stress and personality and then we discuss it in more detail. We will introduce the basic ways of measuring acculturation and the state of the acculturation research in our country and abroad. We also devote one chapter to the community of Vietnamese living in the Czech Republic. In the empirical part we will perform factor analysis for the Czech and Vietnamese cultural orientation and identify important areas of cultural orientation for Czech Vietnamese. We compare the factor solution with Benet-Martinez’s solution to the Asian minority population in the US. We will do the same with acculturation stress and bicultural identity. Later we verify first the relations between the variables using basic analyses (correlation analysis, t-tests). Then, using the hierarchical regression analysis, we put the variables into context. In the discussion and conclusion, we summarize our results and compare them with the results of foreign research, critically evaluating our research and propose options for its continuation. Czech Vietnamese are more oriented to Czech culture in the field of language, media and social affiliation, only in the area of cultural pride are more oriented on Vietnamese culture. The second generation of Vietnamese is less than 1.5. generation focused on Vietnamese culture overall, less prefers Vietnamese culture, language and media, has significantly higher contact with the Czechs. Cultural orientation is influenced by personality traits agreeableness, neuroticism and openness, bicultural identity is influenced by agreeableness and openness.
