The Beginnings of the Premonstratensians Order in Bohemia and Moravia in the Context of the Twelfth-century Church Reform

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá příchodem reformního řádu premonstrátů na území Čech a Moravy ve 12. století. Kromě místních okolností ale bere v potaz i kontext církevní reformy, která je záležitostí celého západního křesťanstva tohoto období a snaží se nalézt širší mezinárodní souvislosti, ve kterých uvedení nového řádu na naše území probíhalo. Úvodní kapitoly tak představují církevně-reformní hnutí probíhající asi od první poloviny 11. století, z něhož se mj. rodí premonstrátský řád. Dále stručně představuje politickou i církevní situaci v českých zemích, protože právě zvážení konkrétních projevů uplatňování reformy ve svébytném českém prostředí je jedním z dílčích cílů práce. V Čechách dochází k vzácnému spojenectví panovníka a církve, vycházejícímu z nutnosti spojení sil proti stejnému nepříteli – ambiciózním českým velmožům. Práce vyzdvihuje do popředí klíčové osobnosti, které se na událostech kolem příchodu premonstrátů do českých zemí zásadně podílely. Samostatné pasáže jsou tedy věnovány olomouckému biskupu Jindřichu Zdíkovi a prvnímu proboštovi steinfeldského kláštera Ebervinovi. Pozornost je upírána k jejich životním osudům, které ústily do reformního zápalu, a konkrétním počinům ve vztahu k českému církevnímu uspořádání. Významnou část textu potom tvoří stručné vypsání postupného zakládání jednotlivých konventů v Čechách i na Moravě. Práce také nezapomíná, že i české kláštery byly součástí nadnárodní sítě premonstrátských klášterů a zmiňuje se o dalším šíření řádu z Čech do okolních zemí. Hlavním cílem práce je pokus o vystižení vztahu celocírkevní reformy s konkrétní církevní reorganizací na našem území. Příchod reformního řádu je pak účinným prostředkem k pochopení uplatňování reformy v českém prostředí.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis, entitled “The beginnings of the Premonstratensians order in Bohemia and Moravia in the context of the twelfth-century Church reform”, deals with the coming of the Premonstratensian order to Bohemia and Moravia in the twelfth century. Besides the local circumstances, the work aims also at the Church reform, which is the matter of the whole western Chritendom of that time, and tries to find larger international connection, in which the beginning of the new order took place in our country. The introduction demonstrates the Church-reform movement taking place from about the first half of the eleventh century and beyond, from which the Premonstratensian order comes out. Next, the thesis briefly introduces the political and church situation in the Czech lands, because the very considering of the particular manifestations of reform in the Czech environment is one of the work’s focus points. A rare alliance of the ruler and Church is reached in the Czech lands, which comes from the need to connect strengths against the same enemy – ambitious Czech magnates. The work emphasises the key personalities, who took part in the events around the Premonstrates’ arrival in the Czech lands. Thus special section of the work focus on Olomouc Bishop Jindřich Zdík and the first provost of the Steinfeld cloister, Ebervin. Their destinies were influenced by enormous interest in reform-making and specific contributions to the Czech Church administration. A brief list of the successive foundations of the individual convents in Bohemia and Moravia is given. The work doesn’t forget that also Czech cloisters were part of the international Premonstratensian cloisters’ web, as demonstrated also by the spread of the Order from Czech to other countries. The main aim of this work is an attempt to describe the relation between the international church reform and particular church reorganization in the Czech lands. The arrival of the reform order shows well the applying of reform in the Czech enviroment.
