The Relevance of Dystopian Literature: Contemporary Implications of Margaret Atwood’s Speculative Fiction

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce se zabývá vybranými dystopickými romány Margaret Atwoodové a současnou relevancí témat, která tato díla obsahují. Analyzovány jsou následující dystopické romány: The Handmaid’s Tale, Oryx and Crake, The Year of the Flood a The Heart Goes Last. Práce propojuje dystopická prostředí těchto románů s teorií entropie, která působí jako hybná síla inherentního chaosu sloužícího jako impuls k reorganizaci prostředí. V souvislosti se Shklovského teorií defamiliarizace (tj. záměrného zdůraznění neobvyklosti a cizosti) si práce všímá, jak neuspořádaná struktura dystopických světů poukazuje na zdánlivě uspořádané aspekty reálného světa. Hlavním výzkumným cílem disertační práce je nejen hledat relevanci těchto děl v současném světě, ale také zkoumat, jakým způsobem jsou příběhy schopny podnítit aktivní zájem čtenářů sahající za hranice samotných literárních děl. Když čtenáři vyjmou tato literární díla z jejich statického a konečného stavu reprezentovaného inkoustem vytištěným na papíře, umožňují extrapolovaným verzím známých událostí a situací obsažených v těchto příbězích, aby se staly aktivními a měly případně transformativní účinky na realitu. Díky takové aktivitě umožňují čtenářům nahlížet na defamiliarizované podoby významných společenských, ideologických, politických či environmentálních záležitostí z nezaujatého úhlu pohledu, vstupovat do veřejného prostoru a zpochybňovat status quo.

Abstract:

This dissertation thesis explores selected dystopian novels written by Margaret Atwood and the contemporary relevance of themes encompassed by these works. The dystopian novels analyzed are the following: The Handmaid’s Tale, Oryx and Crake, The Year of the Flood, and The Heart Goes Last. The work connects the dystopian environments of these novels with the theory of entropy, which acts as a driving force for inherent chaos serving as an impulse for the reorganization of the environment. In connection with Shklovsky’s theory of defamiliarization, the dissertation observes how the disorderly arrangements of the dystopian worlds address the seemingly organized aspects of the real world. The main research aim of this dissertation is not only to seek the relevance of these works in the contemporary world but also to investigate how the stories are able to prompt readers’ active interest reaching beyond the constraints of the literary works themselves. When readers take these literary works out of their static and finite state represented by ink printed on paper, they make it possible for the extrapolated versions of known events and situations contained within these stories to become active and have possibly transformative effects on reality. Through such activity, the readers enable the defamiliarized forms of significant social, ideological, political, or environmental matters to be seen from an unbiased vantage point, step into the public space, and challenge the status quo.
