Causes of child labor in Democratic Republic of Congo in mining sector

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce řeší problematiku příčin dětské práce. Cílem je sestavit seznam příčin dětské práce v rozvojových zemích a následně se zaměřit na případ Demokratické republiky Kongo v oblasti těžebního sektoru. K dosažení cíle byla využita kombinace kvantitativních a kvalitativních metod, včetně analýzy dostupných dat a rozboru literatury na danou tématiku. První kapitola se zabývá teoretickým vymezením pojmu dětské práce, rozsahu a vývoje problematiky, pracovních podmínek a dětské práce v těžebním sektoru a hlavními příčinami, především v rozvojových zemích. V druhé kapitole je představena Demokratická republika Kongo, dětská práce v zemi a především její hlavní příčiny s důrazem na těžbu kobaltu a mědi. Z práce vyplývá, že dětská práce v těžebním průmyslu v DRK, je způsobena řadou faktorů, včetně chudoby, nedostatečného vzdělání a problematiky institucí, přičemž těžba kritických surovin – např. kobalt a měď, které jsou dnes ve výrobě hojně využívány – výrazně k dětské práci v této zemi přispívají.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis addresses the issue of the causes of child labor. The aim is to construct a list of the causes of child labor in developing countries and then focus on the case of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the mining sector. To achieve the objective, a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods was used, including analysis of available data and analysis of literature on the subject. The first chapter discusses the theoretical definition of child labor, the scope and development of the issue, working conditions and child labor in the mining sector and the main causes, particularly in developing countries. The second chapter introduces the Democratic Republic of Congo, child labor in the country and its main causes with a focus on cobalt and copper mining. The thesis shows that child labor in the mining sector in the DRC, is caused by a number of factors, including poverty, lack of education and institutional issues, with the mining of critical raw materials - such as cobalt and copper, which are now widely used in production - contributing significantly to child labor in the country.
