Investigations on the ellipsis in German

Abstract:

This diploma thesis summarizes the issue of elliptical formulations in German and the language in general, taking into account the most significant concepts of this phenomenon within the framework of linguistics, an overview of the professional discussion of the area in question and selected suggestions for the classification of elliptical constructions. In the practical part, the classification has been elaborated on a selected sample of homogenous German journalistic texts from the magazine Der Spiegel (within the time span 1947-2017), the representation of elliptical constructions of individual types has been evaluated, and possible changes in formulation preferences in the captured period have been monitored.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce shrnuje problematiku eliptických formulací v němčině a jazyce obecně se zohledněním nejvýznamnějších koncepcí tohoto fenoménu v rámci jazykovědy, přehledem odborné diskuse dotyčné oblasti a vybraných návrhů klasifikace eliptických konstrukcí. V praktické části je rozpracována klasifikace na vybraném vzorku stejnorodých německých žurnalistických textů magazínu Der Spiegel (z období 1947-2017), vyhodnoceno zastoupení eliptických konstrukcí jednotlivých typů a sledovány případné proměny formulačních preferencí v zachyceném období.
