Ethical and legal aspects of cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce je věnována etickým a právním aspektům kardiopulmonální resuscitace. Kardiopulmonální resuscitace (KPR) sebou přináší řadu medicínských, ale také etických a právních otázek, týkajících se (ne)zahajování, průběhu a ukončování KPR. Rozhodování zdravotníků může ovlivňovat hned několik faktorů, jako je charakteristika pacienta (věk, onemocnění) a kontext situace (např. přítomnost rodiny či existence dříve vysloveného přání). První část práce, zpracovaná na základě rešerše odborné literatury, tvoří stručný přehled etických a právních aspektů KPR a poskytuje tak teoretická východiska potřebná k uchopení dané problematiky. Výzkumná část práce je zaměřena na vnímání této problematiky očima zdravotnického personálu na vybraném oddělení intenzivní péče. Data byla získána pomocí anonymních rozhovorů v rámci kvalitativního šetření. U respondentů bylo zjištěno, jaké mají povědomí o legislativě týkající se dané problematiky a jak vnímají některé dilematické situace vyplývající z rozhodování ohledně (ne)zahajování, či ukončování KPR.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is devoted to the ethical and legal aspects of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) brings a number of medical, but also ethical and legal issues, related to (not)initiating, progressing, and terminating CPR. The decision of healthcare providers can be influenced by several factors such as the patient's characteristics (age, illness) and the context of the situation (such as the presence of the family or the existence of a advance directives). The first part of the thesis, based on a literature review, provides a brief overview of the ethical and legal aspects of the CPR and provides the theoretical background needed to address the issue. The research part of the thesis is focused on the perception of this issue by the medical staff working in the intensive care department. The data was obtained through anonymous interviews within a qualitative survey. The respondents found out how they are aware of legislation on the subject, and how they perceive some dilemmas arising from decision-making on (not)initiating or terminating CPR.
