Military Assistance Advisory Group in Taiwan demonstrated in a documentary The Big Picture from 1950 to 1975

Abstract:

Záměrem této práce je zmapovat úlohu skupiny Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG) na Taiwanu mezi roky 1950-1975 skrze příslušné díly dokumentární filmové série The Big Picture vydávané armádou Spojených států amerických. Pomocí obsahové (tematické) analýzy se výzkum zaměřuje na tři díly této dokumentární série, jež jsou jedinými díly, které byly v Národním archivu USA archivovány a zároveň se celou svojí délkou zaměřují na práci jednotky MAAG na Taiwanu. Vybrané roky pak ohraničují období, v průběhu kterého byla filmová série vytvořena. Cílem analýzy vybraných filmů je zjistit, jaké prvky byly při jejich prezentaci propagandistou použity. Cílem položených výzkumných otázek je v jednotlivých krocích a oblastech dále prezentovaný obraz propagandy rozebrat. Výsledek této analýzy ukáže, jak armáda Spojených států skrze film prezentovala svoji úlohu a činnost (zejména tedy úlohu a činnost skupiny MAAG) související s vojenskou podporou Taiwanu ve druhé polovině 20. století. K výše zmíněné analýze budou využity 3 díly dokumentární série The Big Picture dochované v Národním archivu Spojených států (National Archives and Records Administrations). Jmenovitě jsou to Aid to Nationalist China, Assignment Taiwan a The Army in Taiwan.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to survey the role of the Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG) in Taiwan between 1950 and 1975 through relevant parts of the documentary film series The Big Picture published by the US Army. Using content (thematic) analysis, the research focuses on three episodes of this documentary series. These are the only episodes that have been archived in the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration, and at the same time focus on the MAAG work in Taiwan. Selected years then limit the period during which the film series was created. The aim of the analysis of selected films is to find out what exact elements in their presentation were used by the propagandist. The aim of selected research questions is to further analyse the presented image of propaganda in individual steps and areas. The outcome of this analysis will show how the US military presented its role and activities (in particular, the role and activities of the MAAG group) that were related to military support of Taiwan in the second half of the 20th century. A subject of the above-mentioned analysis will be 3 episodes of the documentary series The Big Picture archived in the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration. Specifically, these episodes are Aid to Nationalist China, Assignment Taiwan and The Army in Taiwan.
