Online risks perception by children and adolescents

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá percepcí online rizik dětmi a adolescenty. Teoretická část je věnována srovnání a popisu výzkumů hlavních online rizik zkoumaných výzkumným projektem EU Kids Online. Důraz byl kladen na srovnání poznatků o percepci online rizik u zkoumané věkové skupiny 9-16 let. Výzkumná část provedená metodou tematické analýzy obsahuje vzorek 25 participantů (4 ohniskových skupin a 5 individuálních rozhovorů). Výzkum byl explorativně zaměřen na zjištění pociťovaných typů online rizik, jejich hodnocení, pociťovanéné následky a možnosti obrany a zvládání. Výzkumnou technikou byl polostrukturovaný rozhovor. Na základě analýzy rozhovorů vznikl přehled pociťovaných rizik a faktorů ovlivňujích vnímanou rizikovost jevu. Mezi těmi byla především velikost jevu, pociťované následky, osobní a zprostředkovaná zkušenost, moment překvapení, možnost obrany a pociťovaná důvěra a přínosy. Dále proběhla analýza preventivních a copingových strategií a jejich pociťovaná účinnost. V této analýze se jako zvláště problematicky pociťovaná ukázala možnost řešení online rizikových jevů ve škole za pomoci učitelů. V práci bylo zaznamenáno široké spektrum možných následků online rizik – od vůbec žádných následků až po fyzické offline napadení. V diskuzi jsou zmíněněny možnosti využití získaných poznatků.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with online risks perception by children and adolescents. The theoretical part of this thesis compares and describes the studies about the main online risks investigated by the EU Kids Online network. It summarizes current state of knowledge about online risks perception within the researched target group (9-16 years old participants). In this study, thematic analysis was used as the qualitative research method and it was performed on a sample of 25 participants (4 focus groups and 5 individual interviews). This exploratory research focuses on determining the perceived types of online risk, factors influencing the risk perception and possible types of coping and prevention strategies. The semi-structured interviews were used for collecting the data. The study has found these main factors to be influencing the online risk perception: the extent of the perceived event, perceived consequences, personal and mediated experience, surprise, possibilities of defence and perceived trust and benefits. Furthermore, the analysis of prevention and coping strategies and their perceived efficiency was conducted. In this analysis, however, the coping strategy including teachers appeared to be problematic. The study has registered a wide range of possible consequences of online risk – from no negative consequences to physical attacks. The possibilities of the future use of the results are discussed.
