The first direct election of the President of the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Předkládaná diplomová práce se zabývá tématem přímé volby prezidenta v České republice. Jedná se o téma, které u široké veřejnosti vzbuzuje rozporuplné pocity a kolem kterého existuje mnoho otázek. Cílem této práce je pokusit se nalézt odpověď na otázku, jaké dopady zavedení institutu přímé volby prezidenta bude pro Českou republiku mít. Jedná se o otázku poměrně širokou, proto je prezidentská volba v práci zkoumána z více hledisek – hodnoceny jsou jednak změny nového ústavního zákona a jejich důsledky pro praxi, analýze jsou podrobeny také zkušenosti Slovenské republiky, kde je přímá volba na rozdíl od České republiky zavedena od roku 1999, v neposlední řadě jsou odpovědi na otázku hledány prostřednictvím zjišťování výhod a nevýhod zavedení institutu přímé volby v zastupitelské demokracii.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the direct election of the President of the Czech Republic. It is a topic that arouses mixed feelings among the general public and is associated with many questions. The aim of this work is to try to find an answer to the question of what impact does the introduction of direct elections for the President of the Czech Republic have. This question is quite wide, therefore presidential election is analyzed from various perspectives in the work – evaluated are both the changes in the new constitutional law and their implications for practice, the experience of the Slovak Republic, where the direct election was introduced in 1999 unlike in the Czech Republic, is subject of analysis too, last but not least, the answers to the questions are searched for through identifying the advantages and disadvantages of the introduction of direct elections in a representative democracy.
