Usage of a word-formation meaning in the field of Czech as a second/foreign language

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce je lingvistickým příspěvkem do výuky cizích jazyků, které disponují rozsáhlým slovotvorným systémem a mezi které čeština patří. Práce představuje čtyři skutečnosti: 1. teoretický popis (návod), proč a jak se slovotvorbou ve výuce (cizinců) pracovat, 2. využití slovotvorného významu jako prvku užitého při výuce slovní zásoby, 3. nástroj slovníkového typu CZEDD (Czech Electronic Derivational Dictionary), který je pomůckou pro aplikování slovotvorného významu do výuky a 4. východisko všech dat, učebnicový korpus UčebKo. Využití slovotvorného významu vychází z hypotézy, že je-li student-cizinec dlouhodobě a systematicky veden k rozpoznávání slovotvorné struktury motivovaných/odvozených slov, měl by být schopen odhadnout přibližný význam neznámých odvozených slov, čehož lze využít při výuce slovní zásoby. Pravdivost hypotézy byla testována ve výuce jak ze strany lektorů, tak ze strany studentů. Testování proběhlo v 6 různých skupinách (kurzech) ve 2 různých zemích, díky čemuž byl slovotvorný význam otestován ve výuce češtiny jako druhého jazyka (ve stejnojazyčném prostředí – v Česku) i ve výuce češtiny jako cizího jazyka (v jinojazyčném prostředí – v Anglii). Využití slovotvorného významu pro potřeby výuky cizinců se opírá o lingvistické poznatky a vypracované lingvodidaktické principy, jejichž absence zřejmě doposud bránila (systematické) práci se slovotvorbou. Zmiňovaný slovník CZEDD obsahuje heslář, který je tvořen pouze slovy motivovanými (odvozenými). CZEDD představuje komplexní popis české slovotvorby (zahrnující mj. slovotvorná hnízda či popis utvářenosti jednotlivých slov), proto lze předpokládat jeho využití i mimo výuku nerodilých mluvčích. Korpus UčebKo byl vybudován z 9 učebnic češtiny pro cizince s cílem získat a následně pracovat se slovní zásobu cizinců se znalostí češtiny na úrovni A2 (mírně pokročilý), B1 (středně pokročilý) a B2 (pokročilý).

Abstract:

The presented thesis is a linguistic contribution to the teaching of foreign languages, which have an extensive word-formation system, and which include Czech. The thesis presents four points: 1. theoretical description (instructions) on why and how to work with word-formation in teaching (of foreigners), 2. use of word-formation meaning as an element used in vocabulary teaching, 3. dictionary-type tool CZEDD (Czech Electronic Derivational Dictionary), an aid for applying the described word-formation meaning in teaching and the 4. the source of all data, textbook corpus UčebKo. The use of word-formation meaning is based on the hypothesis that if a foreign student is guided long-term and systematically to recognize the word-formation structure of motivated/derivative words, he/she should be able to estimate the approximate meaning of unknown derived words, which can be applied in vocabulary teaching. The veracity of the hypothesis was tested in teaching on both sides, lecturers and students. The testing took place in 6 different groups (courses) in 2 different countries, owing to that the word-formation meaning was tested in the teaching of Czech as a second language (in a same-language environment – in the Czech Republic) and in the teaching of Czech as a foreign language (in a foreign-language environment – in England). The use of word-formation meaning for the needs of teaching foreigners is based on linguistic knowledge and elaborated language didactic principles, the absence of which has apparently hindered (systematic) work with word-formation until now. The mentioned CZEDD tool contains a word list consisting only of word-formation motivated (derived) words. CZEDD represents a very comprehensive description of Czech word-formation (including, among other things, word-formation nests or a description of the formation of individual words), therefore it can be assumed that it will be used beyond of the teaching of non-native speakers. The UčebKo corpus was built from 9 Czech textbooks for foreigners with the aim of acquiring and subsequently working with the vocabulary of foreigners with knowledge of Czech at the A2 (pre-intermediate), B1 (intermediate) and B2 (upper-intermediate) level.
