Concept of a Smart City as a response to population ageing

Abstract:

Hlavním předmětem této diplomové práce je koncept Smart City a jeho uplatnění v kontextu globálního trendu stárnutí populace. Narůstající počet městského obyvatelstva a rostoucí podíl starších generací na celkové populaci dává vzniknout přirozenému propojení problematiky stárnutí společnosti a Smart City, kde právě koncept chytrého města může být jedním z možných přístupů k řešení otázky stárnoucího světa. Hlavním cílem této práce je zhodnocení připravenosti Singapuru na stárnutí populace – se zřetelem na implementované chytré iniciativy a dosažené výsledky ve zkoumaných pilířích rozvoje chytrých měst. Těmito jsou ekonomická situace, technologická vybavenost a zdravotní profil země. Mezi hlavní metody využívané v této práci patří deskripce, komparace, analýza a syntéza. Diplomová práce je rozdělena do tří kapitol. První kapitola představuje vymezení pojmu Smart City, shrnuje klíčové charakteristiky a pilíře chytrého města a uvádí vybrané oblasti, které Smart City pokrývá. Druhá kapitola prezentuje globální trend stárnutí populace a zásadní aspekty města přátelského vůči seniorům. Třetí kapitola mapuje zkoumanou problematiku na příkladu Singapuru, kde se zabývá demografickou strukturou obyvatelstva, strategickými iniciativami a chytrým přístupem ke stárnutí a v neposlední řadě počínáním Singapuru v ekonomických, technologických a zdravotních aspektech, jakožto hlavními pilíři pro zhodnocení dané připravenosti na stárnutí.

Abstract:

The main focus of this diploma thesis is the concept of a Smart City and its use in the context of an ageing population. The growth of urban population and increasing share of older generations in the population naturally connects the topic of an ageing society and Smart City, where Smart City approaches can be seen as one of the solutions on how to address the challenges and opportunities of an ageing world. The main goal of this thesis is to assess Singapore´s ageing readiness – with focus on Smart City initiatives and three analysed pillars. These are Singapore´s economy profile, technology profile and health profile. The research methods used in this thesis are description, comparison, analysis and synthesis. The paper is divided into three chapters. First chapter introduces the concept of a Smart City, describes its main characteristics and pillars, and covers main fields in which Smart City approach can be implemented. Second chapter is devoted to ageing population and key aspects of an age-friendly city. In the last chapter, there is an analysis of Singapore and its demographic profile and population structure. Furthermore, it analyses Singapore´s smart initiatives for successful ageing and, as mentioned, its economic profile, technological environment and health profile, which have been identified as main pillars for assessing the country´s ageing readiness.
