The Relation between Pupil Motivation and Performance in English Language Lessons

Abstract:

Diplomová práce pojednává o vztahu motivace žáků 8. a 9. ročníku základních škol podle determinační teorie a jejich výkonem v hodinách anglického jazyka. Jejich výkon byl posuzován na základě známky na pololetní vysvědčení. K výzkumnému šetření byl použit Dotazník motivace žáků ke studiu Anglického jazyka (Agawa & Takeuchi, 2016). Součástí dotazníkového šetření bylo také zkoumání úrovně verbální inteligence žáků. Pro testování verbální inteligence žáků byla použita testovací sada "Test struktury inteligence I-S-T 2000 R" (Amthauer et. al, 2015). Výzkumu se zúčastnilo celkem 47 žáků, z toho 21 dívek a 26 chlapců (průměrný věk 14 let, SD=0,78). Reliabilita dotazníku motivace měřená pomocí Cronbachova koeficientu se pohybovala v rozmezí hodnot 0.51-0.90 a určila tak reliabilitu 4 dotazníkových škál ze sedmi. Středně silná korelace byla určena pro vztah prospěchu žáků a naplnění základních psychologických potřeb kompetence, autonomie a pocitu sounáležitosti a identifikované a vnitřní motivace. Naopak velmi nízká byla prokázána souvislost prospěchu žáků s amotivací. Vnější motivace byla shledána jako statisticky nevýznamná. Naplnění potřeby kompetence nejlépe předpovídá vnitřní motivaci žáků.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the relationship between the motivation of 8th and 9th grade primary school students according to determination theory and their performance in English language lessons. Quantitative research was used for the research survey, specifically the Questionnaire of Students' Motivation to Study the English Language (Agawa & Takeuchi, 2016). The survey also included an examination of the students' level of verbal intelligence. For this purpose, the I-S-T 2000 R Intelligence Structure Test was used (Amthauer et al., 2015). A total of 47 students took part in the research, of which 21 were girls and 26 were boys (mean age was 14 years, SD=0,78). Reliability of the motivation scale was measured using the Cronbach's coefficient. It ranged from 0.51-0.90 and determined the reliability of 4 questionnaire scales out of seven. A slightly strong correlation was determined for the relationship between the results of students and the fulfilment of the basic psychological needs of competence, autonomy and a sense of belonging and identified and intrinsic motivation. On the contrary, the correlation between students' results and amotivation was very low. External motivation was found to be statistically insignificant. Meeting the needs of competence predicts the intrinsic motivation of students in the best possible way.
