The Dark side of childhood in Roman society: violence and death in the children's life

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá problematikou rekonstrukce života dětí v římské společnosti v období římského císařství, a to se zvláštním zaměřením na otázky přítomnosti násilí a smrti v životě dětí svobodných římských občanů. Zkoumá strukturu, formu a rámec života dítěte v rodině coby základní socializační jednotce a jejich proměny v čase. Pokouší se nahlédnout na odvrácenou tvář života dětí, setkání s násilím a smrtí v jejich životě; zkoumá roli dítěte jako oběti v těchto situacích (formy násilí na dětech, smrt dítěte a její význam pro rodinu) i jako aktivního činitele, který sám může překračovat společenské normy a dopouštět se násilí či jiné formy trestné činnosti, nebo se musí vypořádat se smrtí, vlastní smrtelností i smrtí blízkých v rodině. Pokouší se kombinovat tradiční historiografický přístup, v němž je dítě spíše pasivním členem domácnosti, s novým badatelským směrem, který umožňuje nahlížet dítě jako aktivního člena domácnosti a společnosti a interpretovat rámec možného jednání dětí jako osobností nejen jejich roli z pohledu dospělých. Práce je založena na analýze narativních a právních pramenů. Vedle historické analýzy užívá výsledků interdisciplinárního studia.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the reconstruction of the children’s life in Roman society since the era of Emperor Augustus up to the end of the Roman Empire. The questions of the presence of death and violence in the life of freeborn Roman children present the main focus. This work is studying the structure, form, and frame of the child‘s life in the Roman family (this represented the core social unit for the child) and its changes during the duration of the Roman Empire. It deals mainly with the darker side of the children’s live: the encounters with death and violence that the children could have had both, as the potential victims in these encounters (i. e. forms of violence committed on children, death of the child and its meaning for the family), as well as the potential active agents who can themselves trespass social norms in various ways (e. g. behave violently or commit some form of criminal offense), or who have to face the death themselves (either their own or of their close relatives). The thesis combines a traditional historiographical approach in which a child is percieved rather as a passive member of the household, with a new research trend that enables to study the child as an active member of the family and society, and thus to interpret the frame of the potential children’s behavior not only from the perspective of the adults but of the children themselves. The thesis uses the analysis of extant narrative and legal sources and deals with the topic with the help of interdisciplinary studies.
