Influence of pandemic situation on mapathons and humanitarian mapping

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá vlivem pandemické situace spojené s onemocněním Covid-19 na dobrovolnické humanitární mapování. V první rešeršní části je zkoumán vliv pandemie na zapojené organizace. V praktické části se pak práce zabývá vyhodnocením vlivu karanténních opatření na konání akcí určených k mapování, respektive na účast a participaci dobrovolníků. Cílem je zjistit, zda měla pandemická situace výrazný vliv na počty dobrovolníků účastnících se nově vzniklých online akcí a které faktory tyto počty ovlivňovaly. Za účelem vyhodnocení srovnáváme statistické ukazatele a pro zjištění vlivů aplikujeme Kruskal-Wallisův test. Rovněž zkoumáme, zda se během pandemické situace změnila výkonnost zapojených dobrovolníků. K získání dat je použit vlastní skript v programovacím jazyce Python a vyhodnocení je provedeno srovnáním statistických ukazatelů. Bylo zjištěno, že účast na online akcích během pandemické situace kulminovala při vrcholících vlnách nákaz Covid-19 a že prezenční akce vykazovaly nejnižší počty zapojených dobrovolníků. Dále se ukázalo, že dobrovolníci byli na online akcích během pandemické situace výkonnější, než tomu bylo na akcích před pandemií.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis examines the impact of the pandemic situation in connection to the Covid-19 disease on volunteer humanitarian mapping. The first research section examines the impact of the pandemic on the organizations involved. In the practical part, the thesis evaluates the impact of quarantine measures on the mapping events and the participation and involvement of volunteers. The aim was to find out whether the pandemic situation had a significant impact on the numbers of volunteers participating in newly created online events and which factors influenced these numbers. To evaluate this, we compare statistical indicators and apply the Kruskal-Wallis test. We also examine whether the productivity of the volunteers changed during the pandemic situation. A custom script in the Python programming language is used to obtain the data, and the evaluation is done by comparing the statistical indicators. It was found that participation in online events during a pandemic situation culminated at the peak waves of Covid-19 infections and that in-person events showed the lowest numbers of participating volunteers. It was also found that volunteers were more productive at online events during a pandemic situation than they were at pre-pandemic events.
