The Role and Political Participation of Women in Malaysia

Abstract:

Politická participace žen je v Malajsii v porovnání s ostatními státy jihovýchodní Asie velmi nízká. Tato práce se proto soustředí na postavení žen ve společnosti Malajsie, a to od dob pre-industriální společnosti po současnost, a na politickou participaci žen v dolní komoře federálního parlamentu (Dewan Rakyat) v letech 2000-2020. V této souvislosti jsou charakterizovány důvody nízké participace a překážky, kterým ženy v tamějším politickém prostředí čelí. Konkrétněji byl pak zkoumán vztah mezi vzděláním žen a jejich politickou participací, kde byla v rámci výzkumu pomocí regresní analýzy prokázána existence jen nízké závislosti mezi těmito dvěma proměnnými. Dále byl zkoumán zájem žen o politiku v jednotlivých státech Malajsie se zohledněním otázky etnicity, kdy autorka vycházela opět z dotazníkového šetření World Values Survey. Analýzou bylo prokázáno, že největší zájem o politiku byl ve státě Penang a Kuala Lumpur, a to s převládající většinou respondentek čínského etnika, a ve státě Terengganu, kde dominovaly ženy malajského původu.

Abstract:

In comparison to other countries of Southeast Asia, political participation of women is very low in Malaysia. Hence, this thesis has addressed the position of women in society of Malaysia from the pre-industrial era up to the present, whilst focusing on their political participation in the Lower Chamber of the Parliament (Dewan Rakyat) in the period of 2000–2020. Thus, sundry obstacles and biases women have faced in the political milieu were characterised. Specifically, the thesis investigated the connection between women’s level of education and their political participation. In the regression analysis, the results have shown a low level of significance for any relation between these variables. Using the data from the World Values Survey, women’s interest in politics was examined in respect of their ethnicity and the state of residency within the Malaysian federation. It was confirmed that, with the dominance of Chinese female respondents, the highest level of interest has occurred in the state of Penang and Kuala Lumpur, followed by the state of Terengganu, where women of the Malay ethnicity prevailed.
