The attitude of nurses and nursing students toward the issue of euthanasia

Abstract:

ABSTRAKT Cíl: Cílem diplomové práce bylo zjistit názor sester a studentů ošetřovatelství na problematiku eutanazie a druhým cílem bylo zjistit postoj sester a studentů ošetřovatelství k problematice eutanazie. Mimo hlavních cílů byly stanoveny i dva dílčí cíle. Porovnat názory sester a studentů ošetřovatelství na problematiku eutanazie a porovnat postoj sester a studentů ošetřovatelství k problematice eutanazie. Metodika: Do výzkumného souboru, byly zařazeny dvě skupiny respondentů. Výběr byl dán podle předem stanovených kritérií, jednalo se tedy o výběr záměrný. První skupinu respondentů tvořilo 5 sester pracující v domově pro seniory a do druhé skupiny respondentů bylo zařazeno 5 studentů ošetřovatelství ve vybraných klinických oborech ? oboru geriatrie. Pro sběr dat byla použita metoda hloubkového rozhovoru pro který byl předem připraven návod obsahující tématické okruhy, které byly na základě stanovených cílů nutno probrat. Tyto okruhy byly stejné pro obě skupiny respondentů. Výsledky: V naší práci jsme zjišťovali názor sester a studentů ošetřovatelství na eutanazii a postoj sester a studentů ošetřovatelství k problematice eutanazie. Názory i postoj sester a studentů ošetřovatelství k problematice eutanazie se v některých tématických okruzích liší. Sestry oproti studentům zastávají názor, že by eutanazie měla být v ČR legalizovaná. Sestry se domnívají, že sestra nemá příslušné kompetence k tomu, aby rozhodovala o konci pacientova života a už vůbec by nemělo být v její kompetenci podávat smrtící lék. Postoj sester je tedy jednoznačný. Eutanazii akceptují, ale odpovědnost za její uskutečnění by měl nést lékař. Studenti především stojí na straně odpůrců eutanazie. Pokud by však došlo k rozhodnutí akceptovat eutanazii, domnívají se, že je nutné aby sestra byla součástí procesu rozhodování a schvalování žádostí o eutanazii. Studenti se shodují se sestrami, že aplikace smrtícího léku za účelem usmrcení klienta by měla být v kompetencích lékaře. Závěr: Smysl života člověka se mění, hodnota člověka dnes vystihuje smysl prospěšnosti pro společnost, nikoli jeho důstojnost. Život umírajícího člověka je tedy ohrožen. Je proto potřeba se zastavit a přemýšlet o smrti, umírání a utrpení. Je důležité přijmout smrt a umírání jako součást našich životů. Jen člověk, který je smířen se svojí konečností a smrtelností, se může stát skutečnou oporou pro umírajícího. Bojujme proti smýšlení propagátorů eutanazie a uvědomme si vážnost jejich zamýšlených kroků, které by měly negativní dopad na naše životy.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT Aim: The main aim of this paper was a finding attitudes and thoughts in euthanasia issue, where questioners were nurses and students of a medical care. Also were determined two secondary aims, where the main topic is a comparison those thoughts and attitudes of questioners. Metodology: Into the research group were asigned two types of respondents. Selection was defined by prederminated criteria, which ment to be on purpose. First type of respondents was a group of five nurses working at the rest house and the second type were five students of a (medical care in chosen clinic fields) geriatrics studies. For a collection of data was applied an in-depth interview with prepared advanced instruction containing thematic topics, which were been discussed according to base determined aims. These topics were identical for both groups of respondents. Results: The research about an euthanasia issue has shown that attitudes and thoughts of nurses differs from attitudes and thoughts of students in certain thematic topics. According to nurses opinion compared to students opinion, the euthanasia should have been legalized in Czech Republic. They also further assume there is no competence for nurses to decide about the end of patient life, not even at all to give him a lethal injection. This attitude of nurses is consequently single valued. They accepting an euthanasia, but responsible for its implementation should be a propriet doctor. Students mainly stand on an euthanasia opponent side. Otherwise if will be euthanasia accepted in a future, they assume that would be necessary to have nurses been involved in that process. Students agree with nurses that implementation of lethal drug for the purpose of patient's death should have been in doctor's jurisdiction. Conclusion: The man's meaning of life is changing and his value could be defined as meaning of usefulness for human society. Dignity of dying people is threatened and this is the moment to start think of it. We have to learn about accepting death as a part of our lives and face up with definitiveness and mortality, because that is only way for being a pillar of a dying.
