Degradation of membrane and catalytic layers in hydrogen fuel cells

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je popis degradace membrány a katalytických vrstev ve vodíkových palivových článcích, a zejména popis metod, kterými je možné degradaci zkoumat, případně modelovat. V první části práce je vysvětlen princip a složení palivového článku a jeho výhody a nevýhody. V další části je vysvětlen vznik elektrického napětí (a účinnost přeměny chemické energie na elektrickou) v palivovém článku. Ve třetí části je proveden popis funkce membrány a teoretická rešerše dosud známých degradačních mechanismů, které membránu poškozují. Ve čtvrté části je proveden popis funkce katalytických vrstev a rešerše dosud známých degradačních mechanismů, které poškozují katalytické vrstvy. V části páté je provedena rešerše metod experimentálního zkoumání různých vlastností palivových článků (zejména degradace). V části šesté byla provedena rešerše teoretických modelů zabývajících se degradací membrán a katalytických vrstev. Dva modely degradace byly podrobně analyzovány a v poslední části práce byly mezi sebou porovnány.

Abstract:

The main goal of this bachelor's thesis is the description of membrane and catalyst layers degradation in hydrogen fuel cells and especially the description of methods with which is the degradation able to be observed or modelled with. In the first part of the thesis, the principles and components of the fuel cells and its pros and cons are described. In the next part, the production of electricity (and the efficiency of changes of the chemical energy to electric energy) in the fuel cells are described. In the third part, the description of the membrane function and the theoretical reviews of the yet known degradation mechanisms, which damage the membrane, is made. In the fourth part, the description of the function of the catalyst layers and the theoretical reviews of the yet known degradation mechanisms, which damage the catalyst layers, is made. In the fifth part, the review of the methods of experimental research of different properties of fuel cells (especially the degradation) is made. In the sixth part, the review of theoretical models describing the degradation of the membranes and catalyst layers is made. Two models of degradation were thoroughly analysed and in the last part of the thesis they were compared between each other.
