Teacher as a motivating factor in learning German after English

Abstract:

S ohledem na prokázaný významný vliv motivace na učení a jeho úspěšnost lze podporu žákovy motivace označit za důležitou součást pedagogického činnosti. V návaznosti na to se předmětem této práce stalo motivování žáka učitelem, tedy působení učitele na žákovu motivaci k učení se němčině s cílem žákovu motivaci probudit a již existující motivaci udržet, příp. zvýšit. Teoretická část práce se věnuje vymezení problematiky a stěžejních pojmů, a sice motivace a motivování. V empirické části práce jsou popsány cíl a metodologie výzkumného šetření a dále jsou zde prezentovány a diskutovány jeho výsledky. S ohledem na individuální charakter motivace bylo naším cílem nalézt a popsat co nejširší spektrum možných způsobů motivování žáka k učení se němčině učitelem. Za účelem získání hlubšího vhledu do problematiky motivování jsme zvolili kvalitativní design v podobě vícepřípadové studie. Náš zkoumaný soubor tvořili vybraní učitelé německého jazyka a jejich vybraní žáci. Data získaná pomocí tří kvalitativních metod byla analyzována pomocí tematického a otevřeného kódování, přičemž bylo dosaženo triangulace dat a díky propojení se stávajícími teoriemi i analytického zobecnění. Na základě získaných dat jsme definovali a popsali čtyři oblasti motivování, kterými jsou (1) motivující učitel, (2) motivující vztah učitele a jeho žáků, (3) postoje žáků k německému jazyku a kultuře s ním spojené a (4) motivující výuka, dále jsme poukázali i na vzájemné souvislosti mezi těmito oblastmi motivování. Získané výsledky ukázaly, jak široké je pole motivujícího působení učitele na jeho žáky. Mnohé dosavadní poznatky o motivování mohly být verifikovány, navíc byla zdůrazněna specifika motivování k němčině jako druhému cizímu jazyku i kulturně podmíněná specifika týkající se postojů českých žáků k německému jazyku. Zároveň nám kvalitativní design umožnil nahlédnout motivování hlouběji prostřednictvím pohledů učitelů, tedy zdrojů motivování, a žáků, kteří jsou objekty tohoto motivujícího působení učitele.

Abstract:

Considering the verifiably important influence of motivation on learning and its success, enhancing student motivation can be perceived as an important part of pedagogical activity. Therefore, this paper explores how teachers motivate students, what teachers’ influence on students´ motivation to learn German is, how they can spark, sustain, and increase existing student motivation. In the theoretical part of the thesis, the context of the topic is established, and key terms are defined, in particular motivation and motivating of students. In the empirical part of the dissertation, the aim and the methodology of the research are described, and the results are presented and discussed. Taking into consideration the individual nature of motivation, the main goal of this research is to identify and describe a broad spectrum of possible strategies adopted by teachers when motivating students to learn German. In order to provide a deeper insight into the area of motivating students, a qualitative approach in the form of a multiple case study has been adopted. Participants were selected German teachers and their selected students. Three qualitative methods of data collection were utilised. The data was analysed using thematic and open coding. Data triangulation and equally due to the connection with other theories analytic generalization were achieved. Based on the analysis of the collected data, four areas of motivating students were identified and described, namely (1) a motivating teacher, (2) a motivating relationship between the teacher and their students, (3) attitudes of students towards the German language and culture and (4) motivating lessons. Furthermore, attention has been drawn to the relations between these areas of motivating students. These findings indicate how broad the field of the motivating effect of a teacher on his students is. This study has confirmed many previous findings about motivating students. Moreover, the specifics of motivating students to learn German as a second foreign language have been highlighted, as well as cultural specifics in relation to the attitude of Czech students towards the German language. At the same time, the qualitative design provided an in-depth analysis of how students can be motivated from the teacher´s perspective, where teachers are sources of motivation, and from the students´ perspective, where students are objects of the motivating influence of their teachers.
