Corporal punishment in upbringing from the perspective of current parents of preschool and primary school children (birth to age 12)

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se věnuje problematice používání tělesných trestů ve výchově dětí. V teoretické části jsou tělesné tresty dětí rozebírány zejména z hlediska jejich rizikovosti a možných negativních dopadů jak na dítě, tak potažmo na celou společnost. Jsou zde uvedeny definice, základní pojmy týkající se tělesných trestů, nástin historického vývoje používání těchto trestů, současný přístup společnosti k této problematice. Pozornost je částečně věnována také psychickým trestům ve výchově a možnostem předcházení používání tělesných trestů. V empirické části práce jsou v rámci kvalitativního výzkumu metodou otevřeného a axiálního kódování analyzovány rozhovory s rodiči dětí předškolního až mladšího školního věku. Výzkumným cílem je zjistit, jakým způsobem dnešní rodiče přistupují k tělesným trestům ve výchově svých dětí, jaké uvádějí důvody používání či nepoužívání těchto trestů a dále pokusit se identifikovat rozdíly v přístupech rodičů, kteří fyzické tresty ve výchově svých dětí používají a kteří je nepoužívají.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the issue of corporal punishment used in upbringing of children. The theoretical part explores parental corporal punishment mainly as regards its risks and possible negative impacts both on the child and the society as a whole. The part also presents the definitions of the basic terms concerning corporal punishment, the historical development of its use, and the current attitude to the issue. Attention is also partially devoted to psychological punishment used in upbringing and the possible prevention against the necessity to use corporal punishment. The empirical part contains qualitative research which uses the method of open and axial coding for the analysis of interviews with parents of children of preschool and primary school age. The research aim is to find out how modern parents approach corporal punishment within the upbringing of their own children, what reasons they give for using or not using it, and also to identify the differences in the approach of the parents who use it and the parents who do not use corporal punishment.
