Contemporary Family Communication and Parenting Styles from the Perspective of Younger Teenagers

Abstract:

Tématem diplomové práce je komunikace v rodině a výchovné styly rodičů z pohledu současných dospívajících. Jedná se převážně o explorační výzkum, ve kterém byly zjišťovány výchovné styly rodičů (pomocí dotazníku ADOR) a komunikace v rodině (dotazníkem vlastní konstrukce). Výzkumu se zúčastnilo 222 žáků ze dvou základních škol (z toho 114 dívek a 108 chlapců) ve věku 11–15 let. Komunikace v rodině byla na základě výpovědí dospívajících rozdělena na pět typů. Výzkumem byly popsány preference témat rodinné komunikace, nejčastěji se v rodinách mluví o škole, penězích a sportu. Téměř 50% dospívajících by chtělo nějakou změnu v rodinné komunikaci (např. nemluvit sprostě, více komunikovat, nehádat se, více respektu). Dospívající častěji komunikují s matkou než s otcem (t=5,84; p<0,01). Frekvence komunikace s otcem nevyhovuje 39% dospívajícím a s matkou 29% dospívajícím. Nejpoužívanější výchovný styl je pozitivní zájem. Výchovný styl, který je používán nejvíce v protikladu k optimálnímu používání, je nedůslednost (rodiče jsou málo důslední). Analýza vztahu mezi výchovnými styly rodičů a komunikací v rodině ukázala signifikantní výsledky (p<0,05) u výchovných stylů otce (pozitivní zájem a hostilita) i matky (pozitivní zájem, hostilita a autonomie). Zjištění představovaná v této práci poslouží jako podklad pro další zkoumání komunikace v rodině, tentokráte z pohledu všech členů rodiny (rodiče, děti, případně prarodiče). Výsledky je možné využít při preventivní práci s rodinami a dospívajícími.

Abstract:

The topic of this diploma thesis is family communication and parenting styles from the perspective of younger teenagers. It is predominantly an exploratory research in which parenting styles (via ADOR questionnaire) and family communication (via a questionnaire of my own) were discussed. My sample consisted of 222 students aged 11-15 years from two elementary schools (divided by gender into 114 girls and 108 boys). Based on the answers in the questionnaires, family communication was split into five types and described accordingly. The most frequent topic of communication in a family is school, money, and sport. Almost 50% of respondents would prefer a change in family communication (proper language, more communication and mutual respect, and less fighting appeared among the answers). The teenagers from my sample communicate with their mother more often than with their fathers (t=5,84; p<0,01). While the frequency of communication with their fathers is dissatisfactory for 39% of respondents, with mothers, the frequency of communication is dissatisfactory for 29%. The most common parenting style is positive interest. The parenting style that is contraproductive is inconsistency (parents fail to be consistent). The analysis of parenting styles and family communication proved significant (p<0,05) in both father’s parenting styles (positive interest and hostility) and mother’s parenting styles (positive interest, hostility, and autonomy). The findings from this research can serve as a basis for further research in family communication. The results can be used in preventive work with families and teenagers.
