Prospects of the Chinese renminbi as a new reserve currency

Abstract:

V dnešní době se Čínska ekonomika neustále rozvíjí a přitom i ambice Číny jako významného světového hráče rostou. Náplní této diplomové práce je analýza současného postavení čínské národní měny (renminbi) a její perpektivy stát se mezinárodní rezervní a obchodní měnou. Na úvod je nezbytné vymezit základní pojmy, jako „peníze“ a „měna“. Vzhledem ke specifičnosti čínské měny je dále třeba popsat historický kontext a cestu, kterou renminbi od svého vzniku již urazil. Následně práce popisuje čínské trilema, o kterém ještě doposud nebylo rozhodnuto. Práce popisuje proces internacionalizace renminbi, který již zacal. Další část práce se věnuje překážkám na cestě renminbi, které mu zatím brání v dosažení hlavního cíle – stejného postavení, jaké v součásně době má americký dolar, euro, švýcarský frank, britská libra a japonský jen. Dlouhodobá pozice amerického dolaru v roli nejdůležitější světové měny by se mohla v budoucnu změnit vzhledem ke vzniku problémů ve světové ekonomice. Což ale přináší nové možnosti pro renminbi. Na závěr se tedy práce pokouší odpovědět na otázku – jestli je naplnění čínských ambicí vůbec reálné. A pokud ano, v jakém časovém horizontu.

Abstract:

Nowadays China with its constantly developing economy influence the whole world and Chinese ambitions keep growing further. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the present role of the Chinese currency (RMB) and its chances to become an international reserve and trading currency. At the beginning it is necessary to define basic terms, such as "money" and "currency". Further it is required to explain historical context and the evolution of the RMB since its creation. One of the chapter is dedicated to the Chinese trilemma, which has not been decided yet. This diploma thesis describes the recently started process of internationalization of RMB. Moreover, there are still obstacles for China to overcome on the way to achieving RMB the same status as now have USD, EUR, CHF,GBP and JPY. Long-term position of USD as the most important world currency might be changed due to the current problems in the world economy, which is a great opportunity for RMB. Therefore, the thesis describes whether fulfilling of these tendencies is real or not. In case it is – then how soon?
