Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je poskytnout přehled vývoje českého literárního překladu z angličtiny v Československu v období let 1948-1968, a to na základě historických a sociálně-kulturních souvislostí, přehledu dobové teorie a metodologie překladu, překladatelské a vydavatelské praxe, doprovázených seznamem významných literárních překladatelů a děl přeložených a vydaných v průběhu zmíněných dvou desetiletí. Práce se problematice věnuje z více úhlů pohledu, aby ukázala, do jaké míry může politika a ideologie ovlivňovat v podstatě všechny aspekty překladatelství. Práce se zaměřuje především na metodologii a praxi překladu a na samotné překladatele, jejich práci a postoje k nim. Popisuje hlavní charakteristiky a typické znaky překladatelské teorie a metodologie 50. a 60. let 20. století, konkrétně normativní povahu a přísný preskriptivismus, a zároveň ukazuje, jak komunistická kulturní politika a celková politická situace ovlivnily překladatelskou a vydavatelskou praxi, a to prostřednictvím zásahů z oficiálních míst, ničení knih, vytváření černých listin překladatelů, výběru děl vhodných k vydání, cenzury a nejrůznějších úprav textů. Práce zároveň navrhuje možné směřování a oblasti budoucího výzkumu v oblasti historie českého překladu po druhé světové válce.

Abstract:

The major aim of this thesis is to provide an overview of the development of English-Czech literary translation in Czechoslovakia in the period 1948–1968, documented by historical and socio-cultural background to the discussed era and by an overview of contemporary translation theory, methodology and publishing practices, together with a list of prominent translators and literary works translated and published in the course of the two decades. Using a “multiple-viewpoint” approach, the thesis aims to demonstrate the extent to which essentially all aspects of translation can be influenced by politics and ideology. The focus is primarily on translation methodology and practice, as well as on the individual translators, their works and attitudes towards them. The thesis describes the major characteristics and typical features of translation theory and methodology of the 1950s and 1960s, namely normativity and rigorous prescriptivism, illustrating how the Communist cultural policy and general political situation influenced translation and publication practice through the interventions of official authorities, the destroying of books, the blacklisting of translators, the selection of works suitable for publication, censorship and various textual adaptations. The thesis also proposes possible directions and areas of future research in the field of history of Czech translation after the Second World War.
