Issues and challenges in the teaching and preservation of indigenous languages

Abstract:

The aim of this diploma thesis is to describe the impact of colonization on the North American continent, especially on the issue of assimilation policy, which resulted in the disappearance of a large number of indigenous languages, and to describe the possibilities of their revitalization. To give an idea how different was the perception of life of the Native Americans and the colonizers, the first part of the thesis deals with the core values of the Native Americans and with oral tradition which is vitally important for Native American people. Furthermore, the thesis focuses on the process of assimilation of the Native Americans into the “civilized” society with intention to “correct” them. The so-called correction was conducted in Indian Residential Schools. Following the historical background, the second part discusses the question and possibilities of language revitalization, especially through bilingual education. Specifically, it focuses on Nunavik, the northern Arctic region of the province of Quebec, where the language of the Indigenous people, the Inuktitut, is an official language together with English and French. On the issue of bilingual education, it relies on the premise that teaching at first in the mother tongue only is important for the subsequent transfer of these language competencies to the secondary language, even if it is a language from another language category. This work therefore points to bilingual programs that aim to preserve the culture and language of Indigenous peoples of Canada while gaining expertise in dominant languages. It also points out the pitfalls of these programs and certain shortcomings that hinder their success. Some of the sources used were gained during our study exchange at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl postihnout dopad kolonizace na severoamerický kontinent, zejména v otázce asimilační politiky, jež měla za následek zánik velkého množství jazyků původních obyvatel, a následně popsat, jaké jsou možnosti jejich revitalizace. Pro přiblížení odlišností ve vnímání světa původních obyvatel a evropských kolonizátorů se první část práce zaměřuje na základní hodnoty společnosti původních obyvatel a na lidovou slovesnost, která je pro tuto společnost velice důležitá. Dále práce pojednává o asimilačních prostředcích kolonizátorů, zejména o indiánských internátních školách, které byly zakládány s úmyslem „napravit“ a „zcivilizovat“ původní obyvatelstvo. V návaznosti na tento historický celek diskutuje druhá část otázku a možnosti revitalizace jazyků, zejména prostřednictvím bilingvní výuky. Konkrétně se zaměřuje na Nunavik, severní arktickou oblast provincie Québec, kde je jazyk původních obyvatel, Inuktitut, jazykem oficiálním společně s angličtinou a francouzštinou. V otázce bilingvní výuky se opírá o premisu, že výuka zprvu pouze v mateřském jazyce je důležitá pro následný transfer těchto jazykových kompetencí do jazyka sekundárního, i když se jedná o jazyk z jiné jazykové kategorie. Tato práce tedy poukazuje na bilingvní programy, jež si kladou za cíl zachovat kulturu a jazyk původních obyvatel a zároveň získat expertizu v jazycích dominantních. Též poukazuje na úskalí těchto programů a na jisté nedostatky, které brání vyšší úspěšnosti těchto programů. Některé podklady byly získány během studijního pobytu na University of Saskatchewan v Kanadě.
