Gender stereotypes in magazines for children of preschool age

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je zaměřena na zobrazení genderových stereotypů v časopisech určených pro děti předškolního věku. Jejím cílem je zjistit, do jaké míry jsou genderově nevyhraněné časopisy ovlivněny genderovými stereotypy a do jaké míry jsou tyto stereotypy zobrazeny v jejich obsahu. Teoretická část vymezuje základní pojmy této práce. Objasňuje především stěžejní pojmy jako je gender, genderové stereotypy či maskulinita a feminita. Dále pojednává o vývojové psychologii předškolního dítěte, která je nezbytná pro pochopení popisovaných dějů a v poslední řadě se zabývá časopisem jako médiem, především pak dětským časopisem. Praktická část je pojata jako obsahová analýza dvou nejprodávanějších časopisů, které jsou určeny pro děti předškolního věku. Tato analýza se zabývá nejen textovou částí časopisů, ale i obrazovou.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis is focused on occurrence of gender stereotypes in magazines designed for preschool age children. The aim of the thesis is to establish the degree to which gender stereotypes influence gender neutral magazines, and to what degree are these stereotypes displayed in their content. The theoretical part defines basic notions in the thesis. It above all clarifies the key concepts such as gender, gender stereotypes or masculinity and femininity. Furthermore, it addresses developmental psychology of a preschool age child which is essential for understanding the processes being described, and lastly, it analyses a magazine as a medium, particularly children’s magazine. Practical part is conceived as a content analysis of two best-selling magazines designed for preschool age children. This analysis employs not only the textual but also the visual part of the magazines.
