Psychological characteristic of a person in a sibling relationship to an individual with ASD

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je lépe poruzumět situaci sourozenců osob s poruchou autistického spektra. V teoretické části jsou charakterizovány poruchy autistického spektra. Dále je v této práci zpracováno téma rodiny a sourozeneckých vztahů, poté se věnujeme specifikům rodin s dítětem s PAS, zejména vztahům mezi potomky. Ve výzkumné části jsme využili kvalitativní metody, rozhovor se sourozeni jedinců s PAS, který byl doplněn rozhovorem s jejich rodiči Jako doplňující metody, pomáhající k lepšímu pochopení rodinné situace byly využity Test rodinného systému a škála rodinného prostředí. Výzkum přinesl mnoho zajímavých zjištění. Ukázalo se, že velká část respondentů považuje za samozřejmé pomáhat s péčí o svého sourozence. Mnozí rodiče svým zdravým potomkům nevysvětlovali povahu postižení jejich bratra či sestry, protože to nepovažovali za důležité. Někteří respondenti mají dojem, že jsou vzhledem ke svému okolí více tolerantní a mají pochopení pro osoby s handicapem, jiní žádné výraznější odlišnosti nevnímají. Téměř všichni se někdy setkali s posměchem za svého sourozence s PAS. Důležitým tématem rodin s dítětem s PAS bylo omezení volnočasových aktivit. Respondenti vnímali ve většině případů svůj sourozenecký vztah kladně, málokdo z nich dokázal hovořit o svých negativních pocitech vůči bratrovi/sestře s PAS. Může to mít souvislost s malým rozšířením této problematiky a absencí sourozeneckých skupin v České republice. Na základě našich poznatků by bylo zajímavé toto téma dále rozvíjet.

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to understand better the situation of persons in a sibling relationship to individuals with ASD. In the theoretical part autism spectrum disorders are characterized. This part also deals with the topic of a family and sibling relationships in general as well as with the specifics of this relationship influenced by the presence of ASD. In the research part qualitative methods, especially interviewing siblings of individuals with ASD and their parents were used. For better understanding the family situation two supplementary methods, the Family System Test and the Family Environment Scale, were applied. The research has brought many interesting findings. The majority of respondents assume the help with care of their siblings. On the other hand for many parents it seemed unimportant to the children to explain the nature of their brother or sister’s disability. Some respondents feel that they are more tolerant to other people especially to those with some disabilities. The other respondents don’t find themselves different in any way. Nearly all of them have experienced derision because of their siblings. Very important topic for discussion was the limitation of leisure activities. In most cases respondents perceived their sibling relationship positively, however, only few of them were able to talk about their negative feelings towards their brother or sister. In our country it may be associated with the lack of information about this issue as well as the absence of sibling groups. This topic and the findings of this work would be suitable basis for further research.
