Termín Estuary English byl poprvé použit v 80. letech 20. století jako označení pro údajně nový akcent, který vznikl na jihovýchodě Anglie jako přechodný útvar mezi RP a místními dialekty a který by v budoucnu mohl nahradit RP v roli výslovnostního standardu britské angličtiny. The term Estuary English was coined in the 1980s. This supposed accent variety of English emerging in the south-east of Britain on the boundary between RP and localizable dialects was claimed to be new and likely to replace RP as the future pronunciation standard of British English.
