The Effects of Oil Shocks in the 1970s on the Migration Situation in the United States

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této práce je analýza a kritické zhodnocení dopadů ropných šoků ve Spojených státech na migrační situaci v USA mezi lety 1970-1985. Přesněji se jedná o první ropný šok v letech 1973-74, kdy Spojené státy nebyly připravené a neměly doposud zkušenost s touto krizovou situací, a druhý ropný šok v letech 1979, kdy již Spojené státy historickou zkušenost měly. Výběr těchto šoků spočívá v jejich dopadech na americkou ekonomiku, jelikož dopady byly větší než u následných ropných šoků. Časové období 1970-1985 jsem vybrala z důvodu, aby byla testovaná hypotéza zasazena do širšího časového úseku a nebyla limitována pouze na roky, kdy se ropné šoky udály. První část práce se zabývá ekonomickou teorií, která se váže na ropné šoky. Konkrétně se jedná o negativní nabídkové šoky a akomodaci nabídkového šoku. Následně se v práci zabývám prvotním impulsem prvního a druhého ropného šoku a hospodářskou a migrační politikou, která se na vybrané ropné šoky váže. Dále následuje migrace, kde jsou uvedeny migrační faktory. V druhé části práce je provedena komplexní analýza makroekonomických dopadů, která se následně protíná s migrační a populační analýzou. Na základě zjištěných skutečností je testovaná hypotéza prokázána, je potvrzen vztah mezi migrací a ropnými šoky. Přesněji je potvrzena závislost mezi migračními faktory a makroekonomickými dopady prvního a druhého ropného šoku.

Abstract:

The main aim of this study is to analyze and critically evaluate the impact of oil shocks in the United States on the migration situation in the United States between 1970 and 1985. More precisely, it concerns the first oil shock in 1973-74, when the United States was not prepared and had no experience with this crisis situation, and the second oil shock in 1979, when the United States already had some historical experience. The selection of these shocks is based on their impacts on the American economy, as the impacts were greater than subsequent oil shocks. I chose the time period 1970-1985 so that the hypothesis could be set in a broader time period and not limited to the years when the oil shocks occurred. The first part of the study deals with the economic theory related to oil shocks. Specifically, it involves negative supply shocks and the accommodation of the supply shock. Subsequently, the work addresses the initial impulse of the first and second oil shocks and the economic and migration policies related to the selected oil shocks. This is followed by migration, where migration factors are provided. The second part of the study consists of a comprehensive analysis of macroeconomic impacts, which is then intersected with migration and population analysis. Based on the findings, the tested hypothesis is confirmed, establishing a relationship between migration and oil shocks. More precisely, the dependence between migration factors and macroeconomic impacts of the first and second oil shocks is confirmed.
