Hematologic, immunological and biochemical parameters in endurance athletes focused on cyclists

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá vlivem nadměrného fyzického zatížení na zdravotní stav sportovce. Jako prototyp nadměrné zátěže jsme vybraly třídenní etapový závod horských kol Trilogie. Předpokládaly jsme, že vlivem tohoto závodu dojde k poškození svalové tkáně a rozvoji zánětlivé reakce. Nadměrné zatížení, ale také probíhající zánět, sníží obranyschopnost organismu a zvyšuje riziko vzniku infekce horních cest dýchacích. Sledovaly jsme také vliv na hematologické parametry, neboť se udává, že vytrvalostní sportovci jsou více náchylní ke vzniku anémie. Naše výsledky hematologických parametrů neukazují, že by cyklisté měli vyšší riziko vzniku anémie oproti běžné populaci. Snížení počtu erytrocytů a množství hemoglobinu je způsobeno expanzí plazmy, a tedy snížením hematokritu. Snížení hladiny sérového IgA by potvrzovalo zvýšené riziko vzniku infekce horních cest dýchacích u sportovců po zátěži. Avšak vysoké hladiny IgG zajišťují vysoký titr celkových protilátek, tudíž tuto teorii nemůžeme jednoznačně potvrdit. Navíc jsme nesledovaly koncentrace sekrečního IgA na povrchu sliznic. Zánětlivé markery nám také nedávají jednoznačnou odpověď, zda došlo k rozvoji zánětu. Zvýšení hladiny C4 složky komplementu a IL-6 ukazuje na rozvoj zánětu. Avšak další markery, jako byl transferin a C3 složka komplementu, nám zánět nepotvrzují.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to determine the influence of strenous endurance exercise on the health of athletes. As a case study for strenous endurance exercise, we chose a multi-stage race in mountain biking called Trilogy which lasted three days. We assumed that muscle damage would occur because of this race. The body's reaction to tissue damage is a development of inflammation. The excessive physical activity, together with the inflammation, cause a temporary depression of the immune system and an increased risk of the upper respiratory tract infection. We also observed the influence of exercise on hematological parametres since current research suggests that endurance athletes are more prone to anemia. Our results of hematological parametres do not indicate that cyclists have a higher risk of anemia than the rest of population. A reduced number of erythrocytes and decreased concentration of hemoglobin is caused by plasma expansion which leads to reduced hematocrit Decreased post-race serum level of IgA confirms the hypotesis of a higher risk of the upper respiratory tract infection. However, the high levels of IgG are linked to a high titer of antibodies so we cannot unambiguously confirm this theory. We also observed the serum level of IgA and not secretory IgA on the surface of mucous membranes. Also, inflammatory markers do not confirm the development of inflammation after the Trilogy race. An increased concentration of C4 part of commplement and IL-6 would indicate the development of inflammation. However, other markers such as C3 part of commplement and transferrin do not suggest the presence of inflammation.
