Achievement motivation of high school pupils related to time perspective

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce s názvem "Výkonová motivace studentů středních škol ve vztahu k časové orientaci" klade důraz na hledání teoretických překryvů obou zmíněných teoretických konceptů. Souvislost těchto dvou psychologických konstruktů je následně empiricky ověřena ve výzkumné části této práce. Teoretická část práce je rozdělena do tří hlavních kapitol. První kapitola přibližuje jednotlivé teoretické přístupy výkonové motivace, a to především přístupy J. W. Atkinsona a H. Heckhausena, ze kterých vychází použitá dotazníková metoda V. Hrabala a I. Pavelkové (2011). Tato metoda zohledňuje úroveň potřeby úspěšného výkonu a potřeby vyhnutí se neúspěchu. V závěru kapitoly je objasněna role výkonové motivace v rámci komplexního procesu učební motivace. Druhá kapitola se věnuje přiblížení problematiky časové orientace, dále poskytuje analýzu teoretických přístupů k tomuto konceptu s akcentem na Zimbardovo pojetí, ze kterého vychází druhá použitá dotazníková metoda - česká verze Zimbardova inventáře časové perspektivy (ZTPI). Třetí kapitola podtrhuje teoretické překryvy obou konceptů, jejichž povaha je nastíněna v kontextu výsledků empirických výzkumů. Výzkumná část byla realizována pomocí kvantitativní metodologie. Výzkumný vzorek (n = 125) se skládal ze studentů gymnázia (n = 76) a ze studentů střední odborné školy (n = 49). Hlavním cílem výzkumu bylo ověřit souvislost výkonové motivace s časovou orientací studentů středních škol. Statistická analýza potvrdila souvislost obou zmiňovaných konceptů. Potřeba úspěšného výkonu pozitivně korelovala s časovou orientací na pozitivní minulost a časovou orientací na budoucnost. Potřeba vyhnutí se neúspěchu pozitivně korelovala s časovou orientací fatalistické přítomnosti a časovou orientací negativní minulosti. Rovněž byl shledán statisticky významný rozdíl v rámci naměřené potřeby vyhnutí se neúspěchu mezi studenty gymnázia a studenty střední odborné školy. Statisticky významný rozdíl se prokázal také mezi studenty čtvrtých maturitních ročníků a studentů prvních ročníků u časové orientace negativní minulosti. Významný rozdíl v rámci časové orientace mezi studenty gymnázia a studenty střední odborné školy nebyl potvrzen.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis which is entitled "Achievement motivation of high school pupils related to time perspective" emphasizes the search for theoretical overlaps of both theoretical concepts mentioned in the title. The relation of these two psychological constructs is then empirically verified in research part of this work. The theoretical part of the thesis is divided into three main chapters. The first chapter introduces theoretical approaches to achievement motivation, especially the approaches of J. W. Atkinson and H. Heckhausen, upon which is theoretically based a questionnaire method of V. Hrabal and I. Pavelková (2011) used in this research. This method considers level of need for achievement and level of need to avoid failure. At the end of this chapter, the role of achievement motivation within a complex process of learning motivation is clarified. Second chapter deals with the concept of time orientation. An analysis of theoretical approaches to this concept is also provided within this chapter with an emphasis on Zimbardo's concept, which is a theoretical base of the second questionnaire method used in this research - Czech version of Zimbardo's time perspective inventory (ZTPI). The third chapter underlines the theoretical overlaps of both concepts and puts them in context with the results of various empirical research. The research part was realized using a quantitative methodology. The research sample (n = 125) consisted of grammar school students (n = 76) and secondary vocational school students (n = 49). The main goal of the research was to verify the association between achievement motivation and time perspective of high school students. Statistical analysis confirmed the relation of the two mentioned concepts. The need for achievement was positively correlated with time perspective of positive past and future time perspective. The need to avoid failure was positively correlated with present fatalistic and past negative time perspective. A statistically significant difference was also found within the measured need to avoid failure between grammar school students and secondary vocational school students. There was also a statistically significant difference between fourth-year graduate and first-year students within the time orientation towards the negative past. A significant difference in time orientation between grammar school students and secondary vocational school students was not confirmed.
