Anotácia:

Tato práce se zabývá vztahem mezi ženami a šílenstvím v dílech severoamerických autorek: Žlutá tapeta (The Yellow Wall-Paper) Charlotte Perkins Gilmanové, Pod skleneným zvonem (The Bell Jar) Sylvie Plath a Z hlubin (Surfacing) Margaret Atwoodové. V těchto dílech jsou duševní poruchy symbolem bezmoci, neboť jsou především výsledkem marných protestů proti podřízenému postavení žen ve společnosti devatenáctého a dvacátého století. Tato práce však také zkoumá šílenství hlavních hrdinek jako prostředek k dosažení jejich cíle - jímž je svoboda, vymanění se z patriarchálních konvencí a získání moci nad sebou samými.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the relationship between women and madness in works by North American female writers: Charlotte Perkins Gilman's The Yellow Wall-Paper, Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar and Margaret Atwood's Surfacing. Madness portrayed in these works represents powerlessness as it stems mainly from the futile protests against the subordinate position of women in the society of nineteenth and twentieth centuries. However, the thesis also examines how each work uses mental disorders of female protagonists as a device for the achievement of their goal - liberation from under the patriarchal conventions and acquisition of power over their own life.
