Eschatological conceptions and their development in the early Czech Re-formation: The difference between the concept of the Antichrist in Milicii of Kroměříž and his disciple Mathew of Janov

Abstract:

Práce komparuje popis postavy Antikrista u dvou autorů – Milíče z Kroměříže a Matěje z Janova. Zaměřuje se tedy na ranou českou reformaci, Evropu ve 14. století a vývoj, který nastal v pojetí postavy Antikrista mezi působením zmíněných autorů. K samotné komparaci využívám jako prameny dílo Milíče z Kroměříže Libellus de Antichristo (Spisek o Antikristovi) a Regulae Veteris et Novi Testamenti (Výbor z pravidel Starého a Nového zákona) od Matěje z Janova. Práce se skládá ze tří částí. První část je zaměřena na historický kontext vývoje reformního a eschatologického smýšlení. V části druhé se práce zaměřuje na samotné autory a jejich individuální přístup k otázce příchodu Antikrista. Třetí část je věnována samotné analýze komparace a vymezení vnějších faktorů, které měly vliv na tvorbu zmíněných autorů. Navazuji na práci Pavlíny Cermanové Čechy na konci věků: apokalyptické myšlení a vize husitské doby a nabízím detailní výklad děl a objasnění důvodů odlišnosti představ mnou zvolených autorů i přes původní silnou inspiraci, kterou Matěj z Janova ve svém učiteli nacházel.

Abstract:

The work compares the description of the figure of the Antichrist according to two authors – Milíč of Kroměříž and Mathew of Janov. It therefore focuses on the early Czech Reformation, Europe in the 14th century, and the development that took place in the concept of the figure of the Antichrist in the work of these authors. The comparison is based on two primary sources: Libellus de Antichristo (The Tract of the Antichrist) by Milíč of Kroměříž and Regulae Veteris et Novi Testamenti (Anthology of the Rules of the Old and New Testament) by Mathew of Janov. The thesis consists of three parts. The first part focuses on the historical context of the development of reformist and eschatological thinking. The second part gives account of the two authors and examines their individual approaches to the question of the coming of the Antichrist. The third part is devoted to the analysis of the comparison itself and the definition of the external factors that influenced the works of the selected authors. I follow the work of Pavlína Cermanová Bohemia at the End of the Ages: Apocalyptic Thought and Visions of the Hussite Period but offer a more detailed analysis of the sources with respect to the differences concerning the notions of the Antichrist.
