Comparison of temperature conditions of the selected glaciers on James Ross Island in 2009-2016

Abstract:

Teplota vzduchu v období 2009–2016 a další odvozené teplotní charakteristiky byly studovány v podmínkách semiaridního polárního klimatu ostrova Jamese Rosse v Antarktidě. Bakalářská práce navazuje na dosud publikované výsledky českého klimaticko-glaciologického výzkumu prováděného na ledovcích Whisky a Davies Dome. Z provedené analýzy vyplývá, že průměrné měsíční teploty vzduchu jsou na obou ledovcích celoročně záporné. V nejteplejších měsících (prosinec–únor) se pohybují kolem -3 °C, v zimních měsících okolo -14 °C. K překročení teploty 0 °C však může dojít kdykoliv během roku. Kladné průměrné denní teploty vzduchu se s největší četností vyskytují v měsících únor a březen, tedy jeden až dva měsíce po kulminaci průměrných měsíčních teplot. Významnější posun výskytu vysokých teplot je obecně patrný na stanici Davies Dome, která je zřejmě více ovlivňována advekčními procesy než stanice Whisky. Průměrný vertikální teplotní gradient nad ledovci dosáhl přibližně 0,7 °C.100 m-1 v létě a 0,4 °C.100 m-1 v zimě. Průměrná suma pozitivních denních teplot (PDD) v letním půlroce s nadmořskou výškou výrazně klesá, naopak v zimním půlroce může docházet i k jejímu nárůstu s výškou. Korelační analýza potvrdila statisticky významný vliv teplotních podmínek v letních měsících na roční hmotovou bilanci obou ledovců. Relativně vysoké sumy PDD na ledovcích byly diskutovány v kontextu údajů dalších meteorologických stanic na severu Antarktického poloostrova.

Abstract:

Air temperature and derived characteristics have been studied in semiarid polar climate of James Ross Island in the period 2009–2016. This Bachelor´s thesis extends current results of Czech climatological and glaciological research on the glaciers Whisky and Davies Dome. It was found, that average monthly temperatures are year-round below the freezing point. The warmest months are December, January and February with mean temperature close to -3 °C. Winter is significantly colder with average temperature near -14 °C. However, air temperature can exceed 0 °C even in winter. The most frequent positive daily mean temperatures usually occur in February and March. This period is thus delayed for one or two months from the culmination of monthly mean temperature. More significant delay of high temperature occurrence has been generally found on the Davies Dome station, which is thought to be more influenced by advection than the station Whisky. Average temperature lapse-rate on glaciers varies between summer (0,7 °C.100 m-1) and winter (0,4 °C.100 m-1). Mean sum of positive degree-days (PDD) decrease with elevation in summer. However, it can even rise with elevation in winter. Statistically significant correlation has been found between summer temperature conditions on glaciers and their annual surface mass balance. Relatively high annual sums of PDDs have been discussed in the context of results from other meteorological stations in the northern Antarctic Peninsula.
