Factors related to the increase in the number of singles in Y generation in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá tématem singlů, když se snaží identifikovat faktory, jež by stály za nárůstem počtu singlů v posledních několika dekádách. Jako singl je pro účely práce definován jedinec ve věku 18-37 let, jež nemá partnera a zároveň žije v České republice. Singl je vymezen takto úzce, jelikož práce si klade za cíl vysvětlit nárůst počtu singlů, u nichž se tento status nedá primárně vysvětlit ovdověním či rozvodem, když tyto důvody pro setrvání člověka ve statusu singla, jsou typické především u starších věkových kategorií. Podmínka žití v České republice byla stanovena kvůli datovému souboru České panelové šetření domácností (zkráceně CHPS), když data byla sbírána výhradně v České republice. Výběrový vzorek byl filtrován metodou complete case analysis a zahrnoval celkem 1274 respondentů, z nichž 435 bylo singlem a 839 mělo partnera. Nárůst počtu singlů u mladých generací v České republice byl testován v celkem čtyřech hypotézách, když byl dán do souvislosti s respondentovou zkušeností práce přesčas, snadností vycházení respondenta s penězi, post-materialistickými hodnotami a důvěrou v ostatní lidi. Užitou metodou analýzy byla binární logistická regrese, jelikož závislá proměnná partnerský status nabývala dvou hodnot. Z výše zmíněných konceptů byla prokázána souvislost partnerského statusu s důvěrou v ostatní lidi a částečně se snadností, s níž respondent vychází s penězi. Mezi zbylými dvěma koncepty nebyla skrz analýzu prokázána souvislost s partnerským statusem.

Abstract:

This thesis is dedicated to the topic of singles. It aims to identify the factors by which we could explain the growing number of singles in recent decades. For the purposes of this paper, single is defined as a partner-less individual aged between 18-37 living in the Czech Republic. This definition is used because the goal is to explain the growing number of singles among the age category in which the growth cannot be primarily explained by divorce or widowhood as these reasons for being a single are much more prevalent among older generations. The condition of living in the Czech Republic was coined according to the used dataset called České panelové šetření domácností (shortly CHPS), which has been gathered solely in the Czech Republic. The sample has been filtered by the complete case analysis method and consisted of 1274 respondents of which 435 were singles and 839 had a partner. The growing number of young singles in the Czech Republic has been tested in four hypotheses. The independent variables were working overtime, making ends meet, post-materialist values, trust in other people. The used method was binary logistic regression because the dependent variable of partnership status could consist of only two answers. Relationship with partnership status has been proved with trust in other people and partially with making ends meet. Relationship with the dependent variable and the other two predictors has not been proven.
