Fairs in the Foothills of the Outer Western Carpatian Mountains in the Pre-Industrial Period

Abstract:

Fenomén trhů jako svébytného článku zbožní výměny mezi odlišnými producentskými a spotřebitelskými skupinami venkovských a maloměstských společenstev zahrnuje nejen tradiční ekonomickou složku své existence (jak bývala především historickou vědou v minulosti prezentována), ale řadu návazných jevů z oblasti nemateriální kultury. Identifikaci prvků z oblasti hmotné, sociální i duchovní kultury jsou věnovány jednotlivé kapitoly tezí disertační práce. Na analýzu dosavadního stavu bádání na toto téma navazuje stať o historických přepokladech vzniku, rozvoje, ale i pozvolného úpadku a definitivního zániku tradičních trhů na území zapadokarpatského regionu. Nosnou kapitolou je klasifikace účastníků trhů dle jejch sociální a profesní příslušnosti. Etnologické postupy odborné práce jsou aplikovány zvláště v částech o mimoekonomické roli tržních událostí v minulosti a o revitalizaci trhů v současnmé době.

Abstract:

Aside from the permanent shops in the cities, economic structure of the pre-industrial society utilized for centuries especially a market institute for a barter deal between the particular production and consumer factors. In the traditional craft-agrarian regions of the Western-Carpathian foothills, these markets functioned as an independent conglomerate of economic linkages, which played a significant role in a life of both the rural peasants and the urban craftsmen. Their wide sphere of activity enabled application of both the old-time form of natural barter-based economy and the classical monetary exchange within the frame of the existing economic complex. Therefore, we can consider them as one of the backbones of the pre-industrial market relationships in the whole this region. For long decades and centuries, those markets also contributed to mediation and transfer of many cultural innovations – especially in the material culture. A busy life of the market simultaneously attracted not only people of a different social status and from different professional spheres, but it also enabled gathering of people from the different locations and regions. Especially, the markets on the border of different ethnographical or production regions featured, therefore, with a specific variety.
