The influence of weather and temperature on the feeling of happiness of the inhabitants of Ústí nad Labem

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je zjistit, zda počasí a teplota ovlivňují pocit štěstí lidí v Ústí nad Labem, případně jejich subjektivní pocit fyzického či psychického zdraví. Předchozí studie, zabývající se vlivem počasí a teploty na štěstí, poukazují na to, že tyto faktory mohou ovlivňovat to, jak se lidé v danou chvíli cítí. Tato práce se zaměřuje na obyvatele Ústí nad Labem, aby tento vliv, který se může lišit podle lokality, byl ověřen na tomto vzorku. Primární data byla získána od občanů Ústí nad Labem pomocí dotazníkových šetření v letech 2019, 2020 a 2021. Data byla následně vyhodnocena pomocí deskriptivní statistiky a lineární regrese. Jako závislá proměnná bylo zvoleno štěstí (životní spokojenost) a následně také subjektivně vnímané fyzické a psychické zdraví. Jako hlavní nezávislé proměnné byly zvoleny počasí a teplota. Výsledky poukazují na vztah mezi životní spokojeností a teplotou u mužů. Teplota, při které je hodnota životní spokojenosti u mužů nejvyšší, je 15,6 °C. Dále u mužů existuje negativní vztah mezi počasím, kdy je zataženo a fyzickým zdravím. U žen byl objeven pouze potenciální vztah mezi fyzickým zdravím a počasím - tím kdy je slunečno. Zjištění, zda a případně jak teplota a počasí ovlivňují životní spokojenost lidí, může následně sloužit jako podklad pro doporučení, jak realizovat výzkumy týkající se životní spokojenosti (např. Světová zpráva o štěstí - World Happiness Report).

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to find out whether weather and temperature influence the feeling of happiness of people in Ústí nad Labem, or their subjective feeling of physical or psychological health. Previous studies looking at the effect of weather and temperature on happiness suggest that these factors can influence how people feel at any given moment. This paper focuses on residents of Ústí nad Labem to test this influence, which may vary by location, on this sample. Primary data was collected from the citizens of Ústí nad Labem using questionnaire surveys in 2019, 2020 and 2021. The data was then evaluated using descriptive statistics and linear regression. Happiness (life satisfaction) was chosen as the dependent variable, followed by subjectively perceived physical and mental health. Weather and temperature were chosen as the main independent variables. The results indicate a relationship between life satisfaction and temperature in men. The temperature at which life satisfaction is highest for men is 15.6 °C. Furthermore, for men, there is a negative relationship between weather when it is cloudy and physical health. For women, only a potential relationship was found between physical health and the weather - when it is sunny. Finding out whether and, if so, how temperature and weather affect people's life satisfaction can then serve as a basis for recommendations on how to conduct research on life satisfaction (e.g. the World Happiness Report).
