People with psychiatric diagnose from the perspective of their intimates

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá konstrukcí vědění o lidech s psychiatrickou diagnózou se zaměřením na příběhy lidí, kteří dlouhodobě žijí s člověkem s psychiatrickou diagnózou. Práce vychází ze sociálně konstrukcionistických premis o vztahu jazyka a reality – realita je konstruována v jazyce. Na rodinu je pohlíženo jako na specifický kontext, kde dochází ke konstrukci významu onemocnění, jak na základě osobní zkušenosti s duševním onemocněním, tak na základě debat v širším sociálním kontextu. Ke zkoumání konstrukce vědění bylo zvoleno Narativně orientované zkoumání (NOI). V analýze byl použit koncept hlasů, navazující na Bachtinovu teorii polyfonického románu. Druhým konceptem byly pozice hlasů, který je rozpracován v rámci teorie umisťování. Oba koncepty – hlasy a pozice – slučuje ve svém zkoumání Wortham (2001), jehož metoda zkoumání byla v této práci využita. Jako způsob tvorby dat byla zvolena metoda narativního rozhovoru se třemi respondenty, následně byla provedena mikro-analýza jednotlivých příběhů pomocí zmíněných analytických nástrojů. Jeden z nejvýraznějších hlasů, který se v příbězích objevoval, byl hlas medicíny a lékařského pojetí duševního onemocnění. Tento hlas byl respondenty umisťován do různých epistemologických pozic, což bylo diskutováno s podobnými výsledky v rámci analýzy diskurzů. Dále byli lidé s psychiatrickou diagnózou umisťováni do různých pozic na dimenzi aktivity/pasivity. Umisťování na této dimenzi se v příbězích proměňovalo. Jsou diskutovány možné souvislosti mezi medicínským hlasem a pasivní pozicí. Dále bylo sledováno umisťování na dimenzi blízkosti, resp. vzdálenosti jednotlivých hlasů. Umisťování na této dimenzi se v průběhu také proměňovalo, tyto výsledky jsou diskutovány se zjištěnými sociálními reprezentacemi lidí s duševním onemocněním, kde je jejich odlišnost a „druhost“ často zmiňovaným aspektem.

Abstract:

This thesis is concerned with the construction of knowledge about people with psychiatric diagnosis, focusing on the stories of people who have been living with a person with a psychiatric diagnosis. The work is based on the social constructionist`s assumptions about the relationship between language and reality - the reality is constructed in language. The family is seen as a specific context, where the meaning of mental illness is constructed on the basis of personal experience with mental illness, as well as the debates in the wider social context. As the design of study the Narrative oriented inquiry (NOI) was chosen. The concept of voices, drawing on Bakhtin's theory of polyphonic novel, is one of the main analytical tools. The positions of voices, which were developed in the framework of the theory of positioning, were used as the second analytical tool. Wortham (2001), whose method of investigation was used in this work, combines both concepts - voices and positions - in his empirical work. Narrative interview with three respondents has been chosen, as the data acquisition method. Subsequently a micro-analysis of individual stories using these analytical tools was performed. One of the most significant voices that appeared in the stories was the voice of medicine and medical concept of mental illness. This voice was placed into different epistemological positions by the respondents. These positions were discussed with similar results in the recent analyses of discourses. In addition, people with a psychiatric diagnosis were placed into different positions on the dimension of activity / passivity. The positioning on this dimension was changing as the stories proceeded. Furthermore a possible relation between the medical voice and the passive position is discussed. Also a positioning on the dimension of the proximity, respectively the distance of voices has been investigated. Positioning on this dimension has also been transforming. These results are discussed in the light of the identified social representations of people with mental illness, whose difference and "Otherness" is a frequently mentioned aspect.
