Johann Wolfgang Goethe's "Hanswursts Hochzeit oder der Lauf der Welt" As a Protest against the Dramatic Norms of the German Early Enlightenment

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the satirical drama “Hanswursts Hochzeit oder der Lauf der Welt” (Hanswurst’s Wedding or the Course of the World, 1775) by Johann Wolfgang Goethe. This drama fragment, which at first sight criticizes the vices of the author’s society, also bears a witness to the literary debate taking place in German early enlightenment circles during the 18th century. Goethe did not share his predecessors’ conviction that the German drama should conform to the rules of the French normative poetics. Through the figure of Hanswurst, Goethe rather followed the old tradition of Italian, English and later also German travelling acting companies, whose dramatic art enlightenment theoreticians rejected. The thesis sets Goethe’s satire into the context of the above-mentioned debate and analyses the social as well as literary critique lying at the core of the play.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá satirickým dramatem „Hanswursts Hochzeit oder der Lauf der Welt“ (Hanswurstova svatba aneb běh života) Johanna Wolfganga Goetha z roku 1775. Tento dramatický fragment, jenž na první pohled kritizuje nešvary autorovy společnosti, je také svědkem literární debaty, která v 18. století probíhala v raně osvícenských kruzích. Goethe nesdílel přesvědčení svých předchůdců, že německé drama má následovat vzor francouzské normativní poetiky a raději figurou Hanswursta navázal na tradici italských, anglických a později i německých kočovných divadelních společností, jejichž dramatiku osvícenští teoretikové odmítli. Tato bakalářská práce zasazuje Goethovo satirické drama do kontextu výše zmínění debaty a analyzuje jak společenskou, tak literární kritiku, která Goethovým dílkem prostupuje.
